ASMAA calls for the help of citizens and organizations to ensure action for the nullity of the Aljezur borehole

ASMAA calls on citizens and organizations “to communicate to the court their support for the action”, in order to ensure that it “will be judged and not overturned on the basis of administrative tricks”.

The ASMAA – Algarve Surf and Maritime Activities Association, which filed a lawsuit to ask for the cancellation of oil contracts in the Alentejo Sea, needs the help of the public, municipalities and other entities to ensure the continuity of the process in court.

ASMAA's action against the scoop foreseen by the ENI/GALP consortium is based on the alleged “contract defects, illegalities and various unconstitutionalities”.

However, as explained by Laurinda Seabra, president of that association, the Government and ENI/GALP lawyers are now trying to "cancel the action, invoking the association's illegitimacy to represent thousands of people who oppose the oil drilling."

An announcement by the Administrative and Fiscal Court of Loulé was published today in the Público newspaper, giving notice to all interested parties to intervene, within 10 days of this publication, in the action against oil contracts in the Alentejo Sea, and to declare in the records agree to be represented by ASMAA in this action.

Therefore, ASMAA now calls on citizens and organizations "to communicate to the court their support for the action", in order to ensure that it "will be judged and not annulled on the basis of administrative tricks".

For this, ASMAA even provides a draft, which must be completed, signed and scanned to be sent to the court.

ASMAA can be contacted via email: [email protected] and [email protected], for those interested have received drafts of the letters.

"At a stage in which the contestation of oil drilling intensifies, with the acceptance of an injunction by the TAF of Loulé, the exposure of numerous conflicts of interest between the State and the private sector, the great pressure on the part of the government to decide against the The will of the municipalities and populations of the Algarve and Alentejo remains, so it is important to reinforce the need for people to be actively involved», stresses Laurinda Seabra.

The action filed by ASMAA is addressed to the Portuguese State, represented by the Public Ministry, but also to the Ministry of Economy, National Entity for the Energy Sector, Ministry of the Sea, General Directorate of Natural Resources, Safety and Maritime Services, Ministry of the Environment , Directorate-General for Energy and Geology and the Portuguese Environment Agency, with the companies that make up the consortium being “counter-interested”, namely Eni Portugal and Petróleos de Portugal Petrogar (GALP).

ASMAA recalls that the Government is now "on the side of GALP and ENI", having hired "some of the largest private law firms in Portugal to try to stop this action".

Therefore, stresses Laurinda Alves, “the voice of citizens, municipalities and organizations must be heard”…once again.
