Exhibition at the Museum of Faro presents the collection of tiles by Ramalho Ortigão

Exhibition runs until February 10, 2019

The exhibition “From Faro to Goa: a journey through the tiles of Ramalho Ortigão” opens on Saturday, October 20, at 17 pm, at the Municipal Museum of Faro.

«The exhibition proposes a chronological and geographical route through the main specimens acquired by Ramalho Ortigão, with special reference to rare golden tiles from the XNUMXth century or to the famous tiles of Santa Mónica de Goa», says the Chamber of Faro.

This project results from the research work of Alexandre Pais and Constança Azevedo (National Tile Museum) and also Marco Lopes (Municipal Museum of Faro), distinguished in 2017 with an Honorable Mention by the SOS Award in the category of Research in Art History, meanwhile published in 2018 by the municipality of Faro with the support of Montepio.

The collection of tiles, dating from the 1963th to the XNUMXth centuries, was offered in June XNUMX to the Municipal Museum of Faro, the then Archeological and Lapidary Museum Infante D. Henrique, by the family of António Macedo Ramalho Ortigão, after his death.

"The Faro to Goa: a journey through the tiles of Ramalho Ortigão” will be open to the public until February 10, 2019, and can be visited from Tuesday to Friday, between 10:00 and 18:00 and on Saturdays and Sundays, between 10:30 and at 17:00 pm.

«Illustrious son of Faro and a distinguished naval officer, António Ramalho Ortigão has his name linked to museums and culture and is one of the notable figures in the history of the city of Faro», says the City Council.

“This former naval officer, born in the Algarve capital on August 5, 1876, held high-profile positions during his professional career. In his impressive service record, the positions of Captain of the Port of Vila Real de Santo António, Commander of the Maritime Department of the South and President of the Supreme Military Court, in his 70s, stand out».

Among praises and distinctions, he received the titles of the Military Order of Santiago da Espada in 1932 and the Grand Cross of the Military Order of Avis in 1938.

He retired in October 1947 in the position of Rear Admiral. Politics also enters his life, first as a deputy and then as Governor-General of Cape Verde, even announcing the Implantation of the Republic in that former overseas province.

“But the Navy and politics, even though they occupy a substantial part of their daily lives, coexist perfectly with art, culture and museums, other of their passions. Just remember the Maritime Museum, which today bears his name as its patron, and which owes him a lot in the recovery of the old collection and in the preservation of the region's maritime memory», according to the municipality.

Ramalho Ortigão was also a collector, bringing together an immense set of tiles from the most different origins and chronologies ranging from the XNUMXth to the XNUMXth century.
