Loulé is going to hire a new veterinarian and PAN also wants a new kennel

The Council is willing to build a ninth kennel in Loulé

Loulé will have a new municipal veterinarian, who will take up her duties before the end of the year, according to confirmation given by the Chamber to the PAN (Pessoas-Animais-Natureza) party.

According to PAN, councilor Abílio Sousa confirmed that Vítor Aleixo, mayor, also expressed the desire to build a new kennel, "especially now that the Algarve Intermunicipal Kennel has failed", but "there are difficulties in finding land" to build the new infrastructure.

The PAN, in a statement, says that it visited the Municipal Kennel of Loulé on the eve of the implementation of the new Law No. 27/2016, of 23 August, "which establishes the prohibition of the slaughter of stray animals as a form of population control, privileging sterilization and adoption campaigns».

According to information provided by Paulo Pina, municipal veterinarian, the Municipality of Loulé has promoted policies for sterilization and placement of microchips free to animals from colonies identified as having 'responsible caretakers'.

According to this information, more than 300 operations were carried out in the space of a year that have contributed to the animals being adopted without resorting to slaughter. The animals are thus delivered free of charge already sterilized, vaccinated, with microchip and duly registered, after signing the term of responsibility.

Rosa de Sousa, member of the Loulé PAN, insists on the «need to create control mechanisms and electronic registration of all animals, from entry to exit from the kennel, with the publication of the respective photo and profile information in the on-line page of the same».

Responding to this call from the PAN, Abílio Sousa said “that the municipality is not yet prepared at a technical level, but it will create the conditions for this to happen very soon,” according to the PAN.

The municipal veterinarian recognizes that this is the way for the future, but adds that the laws alone will not change things, more inspection will be needed.

Paulo Baptista, national political commissioner of the PAN, considers that “some important steps have been taken, but a larger space for the animals is essential, with exercise areas so that they can live in decent conditions and that allow them to have adequate space for their needs. physiological and ecological, and should allow not only the practice of physical exercise but also refuge if subject to aggression by other animals».
