Young math geniuses fight for medals in Monte Gordo

The Ibero-American Mathematical Olympiad brings together more than a hundred young people from 24 countries

More than a hundred young people from 24 countries participated in the Ibero-American Mathematical Olympiads, which are taking place in Monte Gordo and in La Rábida, Spain, and ends this Friday. Portugal was represented by a team of four elements, including Ana Sofia Silva Guerreiro, a 12th grade student.

The Portuguese representation is completed by Kevin Luiz Ponte Pucci (Chaves, 11th grade), Pedro Moreira Fernandes (Pombal, 12th grade) and Rodrigo Tuna de Andrade (Matosinhos, 11th grade).

The final results will be announced today, at a ceremony to be held in La Rábida, Huelva. In addition to the medals, the Puerto Rico Cup will also be awarded, «awarded to the team that recorded the greatest progress over the last three editions».

Teams from Angola, Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, El Salvador, Ecuador, Spain, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Mozambique, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Portugal, Puerto Rico, Republic participated in the contest Dominican Republic, São Tomé and Príncipe, Uruguay and Venezuela.

Portugal's participation in the OIAM is organized by the Portuguese Society of Mathematics and the preparation of students is ensured by the Delfos Project, of the Department of Mathematics of the University of Coimbra. The Ministry of Education, Ciência Viva, Novo Banco, Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and Pathena support the holding of the Olympics.

Students who want to come to occupy a place in the teams that represent Portugal in international competitions must start by participating in the XXXVII Portuguese Mathematical Olympiad (OPM). Registration will be open from next week and can be done online.
