Two days of memories, knowledge and flavors make culture take to the streets in Mexilhoeira Grande

Sixth edition of this festival in which the museum and popular culture take to the streets lasts for two days

The initiative “Mexilhoeira Grande – Our culture goes out into the street” will take place this year, for the first time, over two days, in the churchyard of the Igreja Matriz in that village in the municipality of Portimão. It will be on the 22nd and 23rd of September, as part of the 2018 European Heritage Days, this year under the theme “Sharing Memories”.

On Saturday, September 22, the program begins at 9:30 am, with a tour of the natural heritage and wildlife of the Ria de Alvor, organized by the Environmental Association “A Rocha” and the Environment Division of the Portimão City Council.

Those interested in taking part in this free initiative, which will end at 12:00 pm, must register through the email address daes@cm-portimao or telephone 282 470 452. If you want to take advantage of the transport provided by the Parish Council of Mexilhoeira Grande, please check in next to the building's building, at 9:00 am.

At 14:30 pm, the party begins in the Churchyard, with an exhibition of art, knowledge and products from Mexilhoeira Grande. There you will find gastronomy, with bread being baked in a wood oven, local sweets, medronho, honey, among other products.

There will also be handicrafts, with the contract, wicker basketwork, cork, atabua chairs and lace, as well as agriculture and seafood, as well as beliefs with tools and prayers.

The exhibition also features small exhibition spaces dedicated to the memories and experiences of the land, this year with a traditional room recreated by the cultural, social and environmental association “Grão de Areia” and a space for representation of some agricultural and rural activities.

The afternoon will be animated with the sharing of stories related to knowledge, told by the protagonists of the main activities of a “traditional” rural nature in the parish and by the realization of a Peddy Paper, scheduled for 16 pm, which will allow participants to discover the stories and memories that the streets of Mexilhoeira have to tell. Entries take place on the same day and the first, second and third classified will be entitled to prizes.

The musical entertainment, which will feature the participation of the Rancho Folclórico da Figueira, the Grupo de Amigos da Figueira, the Grupo de Cantares Mexilhoeirense, concert artists and a ballroom group, will take place at 16:30 pm.

Workshops, workshops and ateliers are also part of the program of this initiative and, at 17:30 pm, visitors can learn more about the art of the enterprise or even participate in the construction of a live bearing cart, which will take place throughout the afternoon.

Bread kneading and agriculture workshops or earth building workshops such as mud, ceramic painting with pigments and clay work are also part of the list of activities in which visitors can participate.

Traditional games once again invite families to play the monkey, the top, the marble, the donkey game or the botica handkerchief and in the area dedicated to the natural heritage of Mexilhoeira it will be possible to participate in environmental games and get to know the fauna better and flora of the parish.

This nucleus will be dynamized by the association “A Rocha”, in collaboration with the biologist of the Municipality of Portimão.

From 19:30 pm to 20:00 pm, as part of the sharing of memories and stories about the village, the film “Mexilhoeira Grande – Anos 60” will be screened, directed by Joaquim Gorgulho Silva, a native of Mexilhoeira Grande.

For 21:30 pm, one of the highlights of the day is scheduled, the recreation of the tradition of the corn husking and threshing festival, which will take place to the sound of concertinas from Mexico. The event closes at 23:00.

On September 23, the arts and knowledge exhibition is scheduled to open at 14:30 pm and the Museum of Portimão supports the Instruction and Recreation Club Mexilhoeirense in promoting the 2nd Great Mexilhoeira Grande Bearing Cart Race, which will start at 15:00 pm , with free training to take place from 12:00.

At 19:00, the musical entertainment will begin, which will be the responsibility of the Generation XXI group, followed by the prize-giving session at 20:00. At 21:00 pm, The Quest will take the stage to close the party, which will end at 22:30 pm.

As has been customary in previous editions, the event “A Nossa Cultura goes out to the street” has the partnership of local associations such as “Grão de Areia” and “A Rocha”, Sociedade Recreativa Figueirense, Clube de Instrução and Recreio Mexilhoeirense, the Parish of Nossa Senhora da Assunção in Mexilhoeira Grande, the Santa Casa da Misericórdia in Mexilhoeira Grande, and the support of the entire community, individuals and merchants, who get involved, participate and actively contribute to the success of this initiative.
