Algarve had fewer tourists in July and is "down since February"

Since February, the occupancy rate has been falling

The occupancy rate per room in the Algarve was 84% in July, 1,6 percentage points (pp) less than in the same month of 2017, according to data just released by the Associação Hotelaria de Portugal (AHP).

The occupancy rate, when compared by zone, was higher in Barlavento (87%), compared to Sotavento (78%) and Algarve Centro (83%).

The ARR – average price per occupied room – was, in July this year, 162 euros and the RevPar (average price per available room) increased by 3%.

“In terms of occupancy rate, this destination has been falling since February. In July 2017, it had already registered a slight drop compared to the same month in 2016», says AHP.

According to AHP Tourism Monitors, a tool for collecting data on the national hospitality industry worked every month by the Portuguese Hotel Association, the month of July registered, at national level, an occupancy rate of 80%, with prices increasing to two digits.

During that month, the room occupancy rate nationwide decreased by 2,3 percentage points, standing at 80%.

By tourist destinations, Lisbon (87%), Azores (85%) and Algarve (84%) reached the highest occupancy rates. In variation, Leiria/Fátima/Templários (down 9,7 pp), Madeira (down 9,2 pp) and Azores (down 5,6 pp) recorded a significant decline. Also noteworthy is the fall in the occupancy rate in the five, four and three star categories.

The ARR stood at 117 euros, 11% more than in the same period last year, with the Algarve (162 euros) recording the best performance, followed by Estoril (131 euros) and Lisbon (125 euros).

RevPar increased by 12%, reaching 94 euros. In relative terms, the highlight is Coimbra with a growth of 31%, followed by Alentejo with 23% and Lisbon with 19%.

For the second consecutive month, the three-star category was the one that registered the highest growth in ARR and RevPar, 20% and 16%, respectively.

Cristina Siza Vieira, executive president of the Hotel Association of Portugal, says that «of the fourteen destinations analyzed by the Hotel monitor, nine showed negative results in terms of occupancy and one stagnated in this indicator».

«The good news comes from a very expressive growth in this indicator in inland destinations this month. In the Sun and Sea destinations this fall was already expected, with a cold July month, the coldest since 2000, causing part of the North European markets to remain at home».

«Bathing destinations in Spain registered the same performance. However, it should be noted that the average price grew significantly in all destinations in year-on-year terms, a situation that made RevPAR grow, at national level, by 12%», he concludes.
