Walk in the moonlight revealed the Salir valley, fertile in history and stories

Ten and a half participants from various nationalities participated in this heritage walk, guided by Pedro Barros and Júlio Sousa

A cultural walk through the heritage, in the moonlight, last Saturday, between 21 pm and midnight, made known, to ten and a half of participants of various nationalities, the secrets of the Salir valley, fertile in history and stories.

Guided by archaeologist Pedro Barros and by Júlio Sousa, a Salirense at heart and soul, the group of night hikers left the Museological Pole of Salir, where the ruins of the Islamic quarter could be seen.

It then followed ancestral paths that link the entire interior of the Algarve and the region to the north and south. There was talk of Morgado de Salir and other large landowners, who extracted agricultural wealth from the fertile valley.

It happened next to Torrinha, where there was a villa Roman, already then taking advantage of the fertility of the land, or in the area where an Islamic funerary tombstone was discovered, a copy of which is on display in the Museological Pole.

The rich ethnographic heritage was also in the sights of walkers, who came across water-wheels and tanks, ceramic and bread ovens, walls and ditches, chimneys and houses with thick secular walls.

The next moonlight walk, through heritage, should take place on the 27th of September, in the city of Loulé and as part of the European Heritage Days.

This August moonlight walk was organized by the Municipal Museum of Loulé and was part of the activities associated with the archeology exhibition “Loulé: Territories, Memories, Identities”, on display in Lisbon at the National Archeology Museum.
