Monchique wants to enter Guinness with the biggest crochet blanket in the world

Everyone can help put Monchique in Guinness, in an initiative that is also solidary

The «largest crochet blanket in the world», measuring 18 thousand square meters and with 112.225 rosettes, could place Monchique in the Guinness Book of Records. The idea came from the Associação Espiral de Vontades and also has a solidary aspect.

Luísa Martins, president of the association, is, along with Teresa Campos, one of the faces of the candidacy for this record. In conversation with the Sul Informação, explained that the idea for the giant blanket “was born from the intention of bringing people together to do something in which everyone can participate, whether with one, 10 or 15 rosettes”.

And what are rosettes? In short it is a square, crochet, which, after sewing, can be used to create various pieces, such as blankets, coats or pillows. AND Monchique has a tradition in terms of rosettes, «something we don't want to lose», according to Luísa Martins.

What is certain is that in order to achieve the record, around 6 kilos of wool are needed, with each kilo costing 12.60 euros, plus VAT. Therefore, the association is accepting donations for the purchase of wool.

For now, revealed Luísa Martins, there are already "about a thousand rosettes ready", to which "others that are ready, but not yet delivered to us" are added. The dissemination of this project will continue to be made, namely in schools.

The giant blanket construction process is easy. At first, each person makes their own rosettes, 40 centimeters wide and tall, in isolation. Then the various rosettes are joined to create the large blanket.

The day the Guinness judges go to Monchique to assess whether this is, in fact, the largest blanket in the world, the rosettes will be joined. That date, said Luísa Martins, "is not yet closed", despite the proposal being for November 25, 2020.

This entire project has a solidary aspect. After all, the blanket will be divided into smaller ones to be handed over to families and people in need, from associations in the Algarve, as well as by the Oncology Day Hospital Service of the Hospital de Portimão.

"We both want to give international projection, as to have a solidary initiative and our objective is really to take this to the end", concluded the Sul Informação.
