“The cliffs are not an option! Choose the safest shade”. It is with this message that the Municipality of Albufeira is raising awareness among users of the municipality's beaches about the danger of landslides on cliffs.

The municipality of Albufeirense has launched a campaign that will tour the municipality's beaches during the months of July and August. The objective is "to alert bathers to the dangers of the cliffs and to make them aware of taking preventive measures", according to the Albufeira City Council.

«The awareness action “The cliffs are not an option!” it intends to sensitize vacationers to adopt protective measures, such as avoiding staying in unstable places, respecting the danger signs on beaches, attending supervised beaches and not sheltering from the sun and wind near the cliffs," added the municipality.

«Albufeira leads the preferences of national and foreign tourists for the beauty and environmental quality of its coastal area. It is, however, equally important to create safety conditions so that bathers can fully enjoy our beaches. One of the measures is to make vacationers aware of the possible dangers associated with the cliffs», believes the mayor of Albufeira José Carlos Rolo.

Also because, in the past, tragedies associated with landslides have already happened in Albufeira. In 2009, five people died following a fall from a cliff on Praia Maria Luísa. Even so, it is still common today to see bathers looking for the shadow of the cliffs, despite the danger signs that prohibit them from staying in the places.

It is to prevent situations such as the one at Maria Luísa beach from happening again that the Council of Albufeira launched the “Arribas are no option!” campaign, in collaboration with the Maritime Authority, the Maritime Police and the Association of Salvadoran Swimmers (ANSA) .
