Aljezur and Sagres remember this weekend, the 14th and 15th of July, moments of World War II that took place in both locations.

In the week in which 75 years have passed since the fight that involved three German Fw-200 Condor bombers and fighters escorting an allied convoy, Aljezur will be the center of activities on Saturday.

This confrontation, which became known as “The Battle of Aljezur”, resulted in seven German deaths.

According to the blog “Aterrem em Portugal!” by journalist Carlos Guerreiro, who studies the events of World War II in Portugal, “among other initiatives, on the 14th, a photographic and documentary exhibition will be inaugurated on the incident and on Lieutenant Colonel Kai Samulowitz, from the Luftwaffe, presents the results of an investigation carried out in recent years into this incident».

The fourth edition of the book “A Batalha de Aljezur”, by José Augusto Rodrigues, will also be presented, which reveals new data on the seven German aviators who are buried in the Aljezur cemetery and unpublished documentation found in the attic of the old building of Paços do Municipality, current Municipal Museum.

Before the two presentations, the Photographic and Documentary Exhibition “The Battle of Aljezur took place 75 years ago” will be inaugurated, on display in a room at Espaço+.

On Sunday morning, in turn, there will be a tribute, in the Aljezur cemetery, to the seven dead aviators, followed by a visit to the Parede memorial, in Ponta da Atalaia, where the plane crashed.

«At 11:00 am, the delegation goes to Vila do Bispo, where homage will also be paid to the two British airmen buried there. They are RAF (Royal Air Force) sergeants Gilbert Orton and George Gibson, crew of a Catalina seaplane that exploded over Tonel Bay in 1943».

There will also be a visit to the farol of Cabo de S. Vicente, which played an important role in World War II and, in particular, in the Battle of Aljezur.

This initiative is organized by the Parish Council of Aljezur and the Association for the Defense of the Historical and Archaeological Heritage of Aljezur, with the support of the Municipality of Aljezur.
