Milreu as a «space for intercultural dialogue» is the theme of the last lecture of the cycle “Amatores in Situ” to be held this Friday, June 22, at 18:00, in those Roman Ruins, in Estoi (Faro).

This lecture will be given by João Pedro Bernardes, professor at the University of Algarve (UAlg).

Milreu is a paradigmatic case of continuous occupation of the same space over 20 centuries. This place observed the arrival of the first Christians and the way they lived with the pagan structures.

Then it welcomed Islamic communities and, again, Christian people. In the same space, (re)using the same structures and dialoguing with the same techniques and construction materials, here a space for intergenerational dialogue was built, but also intercivilizational "which exemplifies well how we have grown and our identity has been built", says the Regional Directorate of Culture of the Algarve.

João Pedro Bernardes is an archaeologist, a specialist in Roman times. He is an associate professor with aggregation at the University of Algarve, where he teaches in the degree courses in Cultural Heritage and Archeology and also in several masters courses. He has participated and led in several research projects of national and international scope, dealing mainly with themes of Roman Archaeology. He was responsible for some archaeological excavations in the ruins of Milreu.

The “Amatores in Situ” initiative, which is now in its 4th edition, is part of the DiVaM 2018 program – Promotion and Enhancement of Monuments – and is the result of a partnership between the Regional Directorate of Culture of the Algarve, CÍVIS – Association for the further development of Citizenship, the University of Algarve, the Portuguese Association of Classical Studies, and is scientifically coordinated by Adriana Freire Nogueira, professor at the Faculty of Human and Social Sciences at UAlg.

Participation is free, subject to existing vacancies, by order of arrival.
