The Vila Real de Santo António CDU accuses the PSD, which heads the Municipal Council, of not wanting an audit of the municipality's management.

In a statement, the CDU states that, with this audit, it does not want to "question the work of the Statutory Auditor nor the control that the various public entities make of the municipality's accounts", but rather to audit the "political management of the latter 20 years old".

In the same note, the CDU says it wants "to know the real value of the debt, without make-up or subjective explanations". “We want to know, for example, if what was spent with law firms, travel, hotels, meals or services rendered was beneficial to the municipality”, exemplifies the CDU.

The communists accuse Conceição Cabrita, mayor of Vila Real de Santo António, of saying publicly that "she is proud of her twelve years of PSD administration and having nothing to hide" and then refusing "this exercise in transparency and democracy".

In an interview with Sul Informação, the mayor of VRSA guaranteed that «cutting some fat», renegotiating the debt to the banks and selling assets, if there is private investment involved, are the pillars of the financial policy that his executive is putting into practice.

According to a report by the Public Finance Council, released in April, the VRSA Chamber is in financial collapse, a reality that Conceição Cabrita denies, bearing in mind that «this issue of debt they talk so much about is from 2014 to 2016».

Two years ago, according to the Financial Yearbook of Portuguese Municipalities, the Liabilities Liabilities (Debt) of VRSA stood at 76,2 million euros. Since then, assured the mayor, the municipality's liabilities have been “decreasing”, although it is still “high”.

In the same communiqué, the CDU considers that it is “essential to know the real financial situation of the municipality, ascertain the appropriate responsibilities and define a path to economic recovery without making the mistakes of the past again, refusing the policy of privatizing services (waste, water and sewage) and public space (parking meters, sports complex, gardens, land and municipal buildings), refusing to maintain precarious work in the municipality and the expense of contracting external services».
