The Algarve has 106 beaches with excellent quality water, according to an annual report by the European Environment Agency.

According to the report “Bathing Water Quality in Europe”, samples taken in Portugal confirm 603 resorts with bathing water quality in the country.

The data were evaluated in 2017 and, therefore, indicate the best bathing water locations for this year. Portugal is the tenth country where the seaside resorts have the best quality water, with a result (87%) above the European average (85%).

The 3801 samples collected nationwide, between 1 May and 15 October 2017, resulted in a total of 95% of waters classified as "good" or "excellent". Of the seaside resorts analyzed, 480 are coastal.

The results were analyzed using five criteria: identification; seasonal data; monitoring of results; periods of abnormal situations; and short-term pollution periods. The conclusions point, then, to bathing waters, for the most part, free of pollutants.

The quality of bathing water in Portugal has been increasing in recent years, and 2017 had 36 more bathing resorts entering the category "excellent", compared to 2016.

Finally, it can be seen that almost all 21801 seaside resorts analyzed by the European Environment Agency report, of which 21509 in the 28 Member States (95,9%), meet the minimum quality requirements expressed in the EU rules.
