The inauguration of the “Municipal Memory Space”, a lecture on the history of health and a concert by Diogo Piçarra are some of the commemorative initiatives of the 104th anniversary of the elevation of São Brás de Alportel to a municipality, on the 1st of June.
The solemn ceremonies begin at 9:00 am with the usual dawn which follows, at 10:00 am, at Paços do Concelho, the protocolary act of raising the Flag, accompanied by the National Anthem performed by the Philharmonic Band of São Brás de Alportel.
The solemn commemorative session begins next, in the Salão Nobre of the City Council, being presided over by Carlos Miguel, Secretary of State for Local Authorities.
At the session, 20 municipal insignia will be awarded: Honor, Merit, Value and Altruism and Good Services, and the awaited inauguration of the Municipality Memory Space will take place, which is intended as guardian of the county's history, «making the centenary celebration and the tribute to those who in the past contributed so that today we can build the future», says the Chamber of São Brás.
This space, which will constitute a new element of tourist interest and dynamizing the Historic Centre, aims to preserve and enhance the heritage and strengthen the identity of the São Brasense community.
In the afternoon, at 15 pm, the usual pilgrimage to the Mausoleum of João Rosa Beatriz, founder of the municipality, takes place at the Municipal Cemetery.
At 16:00 pm, the Main Hall of the City Council will host the lecture “São Brás de Alportel: Readings about the Heritage of Health”, which is part of the cycle of commemorative activities for the Centenary of Sanatorium Vasconcelos Porto, the end of the First World War and the pneumonic.
This is followed, in Largo de São Sebastião, by the inauguration of the street exhibition “Spaces and Personalities linked to health in the municipality of São Brás de Alportel”.
At 17:30 pm, the inauguration of the painting exhibition “Isto é arte?”, by Maria de Deus Alves, begins at the Municipal Gallery.
On Children's Day, as tradition dictates, is the Children's Party, which between 15 pm and 00 pm, offers activities for the whole family in the Carrera Viegas Garden.
To close this special day, at 22 pm, Praça da República will once again be the stage for the commemorative concert of the Municipality Day, which this year has the participation of Diogo Piçarra and which culminates with the traditional moment of congratulations with birthday cake and fireworks show, celebrating 00 years of the municipality of São Brás de Alportel.
