The Municipality of Olhão will pay homage to the “men of the sea”, on the Fisherman's Day, which is annually celebrated on the 31st of May. The Chamber will “honor those who make fishing their way of life, in a municipality like Olhão, historically and economically linked to the sea”.

The official commemorations begin at 15 pm, in the Main Hall of Paços do Concelho, with the presentation of the “Seahorses” campaign, followed by the award ceremony for professionals in the fishing sector.

Distinctions will be awarded in the areas of trawling, siege, local and coastal multipurpose, rigging, aquaculture (mollusciculture), foot clamshell, fishing woman, younger fisherman, marine engineer, progressive fisherman, canning industry, merit, research in
fishing and aquaculture, and the career award.

Throughout the day, various exhibitions will be on display in the Paços do Concelho: the contest for the creation of the Fisherman's Day poster, where all the competing works will be exhibited, the exhibition of works carried out by some schools alluding to the theme of the sea and , also, the exhibition of the photography contest “O Pescador”.

Prizes from the advertising poster competitions and the photography competition will also be presented during the ceremony.

At 16 pm, there will be a mass and procession of Corpus Christi with fishing boats, an initiative that takes place for the first time on this day in Olhão.

The commemorations of Fisherman's Day in Olhão culminate in the Municipal Museum, «a place with a very strong symbolic charge, since it was in that building that the Maritime Commitment once functioned», explains the Municipality of Olhão.

At 18 pm, the exhibition “Pollution in the Sea” will be inaugurated, followed by a tasting of fish from the national auctions – mackerel and horse mackerel – organized in partnership with DOCAPESCA.

The Municipality of Olhão “recognizes, therefore, the importance of all those who work in the various activities of the fisheries and aquaculture sector”, concludes the municipality.
