If Manuel Teixeira Gomes lived in the 3st century, what shows would he like to see? This question was the starting point for the creation of the Festival Entre Mares, which will take place at TEMPO – Teatro Municipal de Portimão, between the 7rd of May and the XNUMXth of June. There will be new circus shows, dancing, world music, theater and cinema from the other side of the Mediterranean, but there is also space for creation made in Portimao.

«Let's imagine a contemporary Teixeira Gomes, a lover of music, of art, what would he look for if he continued traveling in the Southern Mediterranean? It is from there that this idea of making the city of Portimão a stage to present the contemporary artistic creation of some Maghreb countries was born», explains João Ventura, artistic director of TEMPO, to the Sul Informação.

Morocco will be one of the countries represented on the TEMPO stage. «Halka, from the Tangier Acrobatic Group, will open the festival [on May 4th and 5th, at 21 pm]. It is a show of a new circus by a group that is an international reference and that usually performs a lot in France, but also in the rest of Europe, the United States and Canada», says João Ventura.

According to Portimão, «in “Halka”, the ancestral Moroccan acrobatic art finds itself in the arms of a group of 14 acrobats who break down cultural, gender and class geographic boundaries, offering us an intense hour of circus popular and democratic contemporary, full of unique acrobatic feats to the rhythm of drums, tar, banjo and ribab, mixing poetry, humor and melancholy on stage».

Also from Morocco, he will travel to Portimão, Oum, «a singer from Marrakesh, who will bring the World Music to the festival and that makes a fusion between traditional Moroccan music and contemporary music», reveals the artistic director of TEMPO. This show is scheduled for the 19th of May.

Entre Mares will also have a "world premiere". Ziya Azazi, who performed at TEMPO in 2010, is a dancer who “fuses dervish and contemporary dance. It will be a solo, with two live musicians, but it's more than that. Ziya Azazi comes to finish preparing this show here in Portimão. It will be in residence from the 3rd and will be presented on the 12th. It will also be a show with a very interesting technological component. It's a must,” guarantees João Ventura.

Ziya Azazi will also minister a workshop dervish dance, intended for people over 18 years old, with or without dance training. This initiative takes place on the 3rd and 4th of May, between 18:30 and 21:30, and on the 5th of May, from 15:30 to 18:30, costing 30 euros.

The play “Dois Séculos” is scheduled for May 26, by the company Quorum Ballet, choreographed by Daniel Cardoso. This show, which will be «an evocative performance by Manuel Teixeira Gomes, combines the languages of dance, theater, poetry, music, plastic arts and multimedia techniques».

In addition to international artists, Entre Mares is also made by “people of the land”. For João Ventura, this meeting between international artists and local artists at the same festival «is fundamental for us». «TEMPO belongs to the city, belongs to the community and intends to be a lever for emerging local creation. There's nothing better than taking advantage of the coming of reference artists to Portimão to create an effect of “drag” on local production, which is amateur, but which does serious and structured work. It is with this articulation between what comes from outside and what is done here, that the identity of a municipal theater is built».

The Dancenema cultural association is one of the local groups that will act in Entre Mares. The group will present the play “Sem Retorno”, «a reflection on the state of mind, personality and introspection about the worlds experienced by Manuel Teixeira Gomes, developed under the contemporary perspective of the authors Ana Alberto and Thora Jorge», explains the Câmara de Portimao.

The cinema will be in charge of the cultural association Contramaré, which will present a Mediterranean cinema marathon at the Museu de Portimão Auditorium. In this initiative called “Mar à Tona”, “the public will be able to learn a little about the Mediterranean cinema, strongly marked by the presence of the sea, through two fiction films and a documentary, where this element clearly takes a prominent place”, he adds. the organization.
