Films and documentaries dedicated to the oceans will be screened between Thursday, March 8th and Saturday, March 10th, in a new edition of Festival Scianema, which the association Sciaena will promote in different spaces of Faro.

This initiative aims to «show in Portugal a selection of documentaries dedicated to the oceans, with the aim of encouraging, inspiring, raising awareness and promoting their free access not only to specialists, but also to the general public».

"This festival aims to facilitate scientific communication about the marine world, promoting an open discussion, creating an opportunity for researchers, students, filmmakers and others interested in films and media to enjoy and discuss together the issues of the sea", reinforced Sciaena .

The festival will have five sessions, each dedicated to a different theme, during which a feature film or a selection of short films will be screened, «followed by a panel discussion with experts and interested in each of the themes» (see program complete below).

Among the works that will be exhibited, the organization highlights the national premiere of the film “A Grande Onda”, about the risk of tsunamis in the Iberian Peninsula, on the 8th, as well as the screening of the film “Odisseia”, about the life of Jacques Cousteau, chosen by the Cineclube de Faro to be part of the festival, which can be seen on Sunday.

“On Friday, the 9th, a very current topic will be addressed – plastics and marine litter with the screening of the Brazilian film “Uma Drop”», adds Sciaena.

These three sessions will take place at “Os Artistas”, starting at 21:30 pm and with the collaboration of the Cineclube de Faro.

The program also includes two sessions aimed at students at the University of Algarve. On Thursday, a selection of short films on the theme of fisheries sustainability will be screened, followed by a presentation on the implementation of the Common Fisheries Policy by Gonçalo Carvalho, president of Sciaena and expert in fisheries policies.

On the 9th, short films on deep sea mining will be screened, followed by a lecture on the theme “Mining in Deep Sea – No Thanks”, given by Gonçalo Carvalho on the “Oceano Livre” initiative. Both sessions will take place at the University of Algarve's Gambelas Campus, in Faro, at 16:30 pm and have the support of CCMAR.

“Given the importance of environmental awareness, not only for adults, but also for younger people, this edition will also include an activity in two secondary schools in the Algarve on the mornings of the 8th and 9th, which will consist of the screening of a selection of short films on various issues of marine conservation, followed by an open discussion with students», concluded the organization.

Entry to all festival events is free. The films are subtitled or dubbed in Portuguese.
