The cities of Faro (8th place), Albufeira (16th) and Portimão (17th) are the three Algarve presences in the top25 of the Bloom Consulting Portugal City Brand Ranking©, which ranks the best cities to invest, visit and live.

The Algarve capital, according to the consultant responsible for the 5th edition of this ranking, «consolidates its position in the Top 10 National, which is once again led by Lisbon, Porto, Cascais, Braga and Coimbra». Faro it even rises, this time, one position, to 8th place in the Top25.

This ranking evaluates and classifies Portuguese municipalities according to their performance in the areas of Investment (Business), Tourism (Visit) and Talent (Living). The ranking analyzes the effectiveness of the 308 municipalities and is commanded, unsurprisingly, by the city of Lisbon.

But there is some good news for the Algarve cities, in national terms. Thus, in the national Top20 in the Business category, Faro appears in 10th place and Albufeira in 18rd.

In the Live indicator, Faro it once again has the best performance among the Algarve, occupying 15th place (up two positions), while Portimão ranks 19th, having gone up six positions.

As one would expect, Algarve cities are better positioned in the Visit category, as this has to do with the ability to attract tourists. Thus, across the country, and after big cities like Lisbon, Porto, Funchal and Cascais, Albufeira comes in 5th place (but has dropped one position since last year), followed by Portimão in 6th.

Among the 25 cities in this top Visit from all over the country, there are still Faro (11th), Tavira (16th) and Lagos (22nd). However, compared to the 2017 ranking, it appears that Tavira dropped 7 positions.

Portimão was the municipality that, in 2018, recorded the highest increase in the «Living» indicator of the Portugal City Brand Ranking/2018 – Portuguese Municipalities, promoted by Bloom Consulting, occupying 19th place in this indicator, having risen, for the second consecutive year, six positions, in national terms and compared to 2017.

With regard to the ranking for the Algarve, in a region that has three municipalities in the Top 25 nationally, there is a podium unchanged since the first edition of Bloom Consulting Portugal City Brand Ranking©, in 2014, led by Faro, Albufeira and Portimão. All these municipalities rose in the positions in the national ranking compared to the last edition.

For the 5th consecutive edition, Faro is a leader in the Algarve region, showing an undisputed domain in the Business and Living Dimensions. The capital of the Algarve not only manages to climb a position in the National Ranking, but also reach, for the first time, the 3rd place in the regional ranking of Tourism (Visitar), passing the municipality of Tavira, which has held the position since the first edition of Bloom Consulting Portugal City Brand Ranking©.

At a regional level, Tavira regains the 4th place it occupied in 2016 and Loulé closes the Top 5, in a lower position compared to the previous edition.

After the 5th position, only Lagos (6th place) and Aljezur (10th place) keep the positions reached in the last edition of the ranking. Silves gave the 7th place to Vila Real de Santo António, which managed to improve its performance in all dimensions, being even surpassed by Olhão, which now holds the 8th place in the table.

Vila do Bispo and Monchique, with a considerable rise, mainly due to the variables online and D2© (Digital Demand ), managed to rise by two positions, relegating Lagoa and Castro Marim to 13th and 14th places, respectively.

At the bottom of the table, there is a direct exchange between Alcoutim (which showed a considerable increase in the Business and Visiting Dimensions) and São Brás de Alportel.

How is this ranking done?

Bloom Consulting bases its annual Portugal City Brand Ranking© study on a proprietary algorithm.

In each edition, different sources of information are considered, related to the three dimensions (Business, Visiting and Living) for the formation of this algorithm.

The final results of this ranking not only measure perceptions about a municipality, but also rank its brand performance in a tangible and realistic way.

This algorithm is composed of three base variables, used to analyze the success of the brand of the 308 Portuguese municipalities, as well as their relative performance among them.

The methodology used evaluates the tourist and social economic variable, represented by statistical data, the demand variable through online surveys captured by the Digital Demand tool – D2© and the online performance variable, through the analysis of websites and social networks officials of each municipality.

In this concrete and rigorous way, it is possible to assess the performance and effectiveness of the various municipalities in attracting investors, tourists and new residents.
