The study of Roman ceramics in Loulé is the subject of a workshop taking place from April 2nd to 6th, at the Museu Nacional de Arqueologia, in Lisbon. 

This initiative comes within the scope of the partnership developed by the Municipality of Loulé, through the Municipal Museum of Loulé, and the National Museum of Archeology, and whose most visible result is the exhibition “Loulé: Territories, Memories, Identities”, open to the public in the Jerónimos Monastery.

This workshop will take place during the Easter holidays (from April 2nd to 6th, from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm and from 14:00 pm to 17:00 pm) and is free and open to all audiences. The objective is “to combine research and knowledge sharing around Roman ceramics”, explains the Câmara de Loulé.

In a context of real laboratory work, archaeologists from the University of Lisbon (UNIARQ) and the National Museum of Archeology will lead a practical workshop on Introduction to the Study of Roman Ceramics, where they teach all the essential steps in the treatment and study of these materials. in the archaeological collections.

For this initiative, which also aims to educate within the values ​​of social responsibility and foster the importance of the citizen and citizen as a builder and guardian of their historical heritage, the Municipal Museum of Loulé and the National Museum of Archeology in partnership made available for theoretical work- practical part of a collection common to both institutions: that of the Roman site of Loulé Velho.

This important Roman site in the municipality and in the Algarve «is currently at risk of disappearing, which is why the participation of those who frequent it and the contribution provided by the workshop is even more important», considers the municipality.

The Introduction to Roman Ceramics workshop also offers several complementary theoretical sessions, in the form of small classes and lectures, guided tours of the backstage/services of the National Museum of Archeology, as well as the exhibition “Loulé, Territories, Memories, Identities”.

In short, it offers the possibility to explore the Roman world of Loulé, it allows you to know and learn firsthand what the ceramics of that period of history were like and how kitchen ceramics, table ceramics or food transported in amphorae arrived in the Algarve today. from throughout the Roman Empire, especially from present-day Spanish Andalusia, France, Italy or North Africa.

The exhibition “Loulé: Territories, Memories, Identities”, on display at the National Archeology Museum, a partnership between the General Directorate of Cultural Heritage, the National Archeology Museum and the Loulé City Council, has already been visited by more than 120 visitors .
