Cinema, visual arts, dance, music and theater. In April, the proposals of the “365Algarve” program promise “unique moments for the Algarve and tourists visiting the region”. 

Starting with the theater, in a sarcastic, comic and tragic style, the actors in “Return to Palestine” present real stories told by inhabitants of several Palestinian refugee camps. In this interactive play, Jad, a Palestinian born in the United States of America decides to visit Palestine for the first time, when he discovers that reality can be very different from what he imagines.

This play with a strong historical and emotional character will be on stage in a single session on April 13, at 21 pm, at Cineteatro Louletano.

Already play “Mar Adentro”, by aquatic theater, recreates elements of the ocean with actors imitating dolphins, seahorses and other elements of the sea, in a unique combination of light, movement, music and images. This play, which spectators can only watch properly equipped with a bathing suit, bathrobe and slippers, will be on stage between the 5th and 8th of April, at the Monchique Pools, after the premiere in Aljezur, in another production of “Lavrar o Mar”.

In April, the 33rd FIMA – Algarve International Music Festival continues its mission to promote access to classical music, through a series of concerts throughout the Algarve region.

On the 6th of April, at the Auditório Municipal de Lagoa, “Iberia” brings together, on the same stage, the Orquestra Clássica do Sul, the guitarist Gaëlle Solal and the conductor Martin André, known for his keen sense of style and contagious energy. This concert is marked by the absolute debut of the orchestration of the “Suite Al-Gharb”, produced in 1941 as a suite of eight pieces for piano, with an impressionist character, which describes, through sounds, some of the Algarve's landscapes.

“Mozart – Masterpieces for Wind II” is a concert by the Orquestra Clássica do Sul Chamber Music Group that interprets the most charismatic works of Mozart, highlighting the wind instruments and will take place on April 12, at 21 pm , in the Municipal Library Auditorium of Faro.

On April 14, the Centro Cultural de Lagos hosts the “Doppio Ensemble” concert, a recital for violin and piano with Evandra de Brito Gonçalves and Ana Queirós, which promotes Portuguese contemporary art through the approach of renowned composers and works of young composers.

On April 20, “Os Sons e os Perfumes” invade Carmo Church in Tavira, on the notes of the Orquestra Clássica do Sul, with conductor Rui Pinheiro, who will interpret two works composed 210 years apart.

Chilingirian, one of the most important string quartets, with a repertoire with different musical styles, will be in what is perhaps the most emblematic room of Faro: Teatro Lethes, on April 21, to present two of the great quartets of Mozart and Beethoven.

This month's “365 Algarve” musical program also includes Beethoven's Concerto for piano and orchestra “op73 nr5” by soloist Artur Pizarro, with conductor Nikolai Lalov conducting the Cascais and Oeiras Chamber Orchestra (7th of April at Teatro Municipality of Portimão) and two sessions of the cycle “Jazz nas Wineries”.

The first is held on April 7 at Quinta do Outeiro, in Silves, and receives the trio composed of Alexandre Dahmen, drummer Mário Costa and bassist José Carlos Barbosa, who will present their new work.

The second, on April 14, at Quinta da Malaca, in Pêra, hosts the Miss Manouche quartet, in which the rhythm swing from the 20s and 30s, the fiery passion of manouche jazz and the unavoidable figure of Django Reinhardt are the main calling cards.

When it comes to gastronomy, the AlGharb.Come Festival, which serves Algarvian delicacies to the sound of Fado and Flamenco, in the most diverse places, has a rich schedule of events in April. On the 7th, he will be at the António Aleixo Cultural Center, in Vila Real de Santo António, with Fado & Flamenco, and on the 14th of April, at the Casa do Sal in Castro Marim, for a showcooking at 10:00 am and a gourmet dinner and flamenco show at 20:30 pm.

On the 21st, he will organize the Guadiana MasterChefs in the Historic Center of Vila Real de Santo António and, finally, on the 28th, he plans a photo tour with gastronomic tasting and Flamenco show in Alta Mora, Guerreiros do Rio, in Alcoutim .

CataPlay, the piece that makes the culinary experience a true spectacle, returns in April with two events where the cataplana, the Algarve gastronomic traditions and the heartbreaks of love are the main characters: on the 8th of April it presents itself at the Municipal Museum of Faro and on April 22nd at the Mercado da Ribeira in Tavira.

With regard to the visual arts, until 6 April, in the building of the Antigos Paços de Concelho in Lagos, the exhibition “Refuge and Segregation” presents a set of photographs that portray the migratory movement of millions of exiles in refugee camps throughout the world, through the lens of Elisabete Maisão.

From the 7th of April to the 19th of May, the Portuguese photographer will also exhibit her work “Refugiados HOJE” at Galeria do Mar, in Quarteira.

Award-winning sculptor Pedro Valdez Cardoso presents his work “A Primeira Pedra” at the Municipal Museum of Faro, from April 14th to June 10th. Until April 8, it is still possible to attend the painting exhibition “Praia”, by Ana André, the drawing exhibition “Ar”, by Isabel Baraona, Thierry Simões and Tiago Baptista. Until April 30, the photography exhibition “Tochas”, by Vasco Célio, will also be on display at the Municipal Gallery of São Brás de Alportel.

Cataplana

Moving on to the cinema, April is again the month of “Video Lucem”, the cycle of cine-concerts in the churches of the Algarve.  At the Sé de Silves, on April 6, the film by Manuel de Oliveira, “Douro, Faina Fluvial”, “A propos de Nice”, by Jean Vigo, will be screened, as well as a documentary about Faro. All live music by Ana Deus, Viviane & guests.

Odeceixe hosts, in turn, a contemporary circus show that combines rhythm, voice, dance, acrobatics and visual arts. “Bestias” stars a tribe of horses, birds and human beings, which promises to move spectators (24, 25, 27, 28, 29 April at Malhadais Football Field, in Odeceixe). This show is part of the «Lavrar o Mar» project.

April is the month in which World Dance Day is celebrated (on the 29th) and “365 Algarve” has an agenda full of proposals in this area, by the hand of the 4th edition of Festival Encontros de DeVIR, which it promotes, in its absolute debut in Portugal , several shows throughout the month.

In Romnia de Belén Maya, with the sound of a vigorous soundtrack, themes such as slavery, the holocaust and ethnic cleansing are addressed (April 14, at 12:00 at Cerca do Convento in Loulé and at 21:30 at Teatro das Figuras, in Faro).

On April 28, at Cine-Teatro Louletano, “Fiend”, by Tim Casson, is a solo that works as a mirror using new technologies, where real and imaginary, memory and magic intersect.

English Tim Casson also takes the stage at Cerca do Convento de Loulé, at 11:30 am, with “The Dance WE Made”. The Algarve Performing Arts Center in Faro, also receives two unique exhibitions: the workshop “Fractal Manifesto – introduction to the Axis Syllabus”, which is based on harmonizing the alignment of the whole body, and which helps participants to move better, with less injuries, more strength and flexibility, runs from the 13th to the 15th of April and “Almost Soma Are We – The body as living poetry”, by Frey Faust, will be on the scene on the 15th of April.

Finally, with regard to heritage entertainment, “Compromisso Marítimo” proposes a guided tour through the ethnography, history, gastronomy and cultural and artistic manifestations of the city of Lagos. Lasting four hours and including dinner, this urban circuit takes place on the 7th of April, at Dr. Júdice Cabral Park. "Faro Unveiled” continues to be present in the “365 Algarve” program, with another session on the 26th.
