The first Oenology Laboratory in the Algarve, located in the premises of the Algarve Wine Commission (CVA) in Lagoa, is already in operation.

This laboratory is able to carry out analyzes of finished wine (ready for consumption), must (wine in production) and vintage (grape maturation).

These three types of tests "are available not only to producers, but to any public or private entity that requests it, by filling out an analysis report and delivering the respective sample, then receiving the results electronically", explains the CVA

The laboratory «is equipped with modern and functional equipment, based on the analysis of samples by Infrared (FTIR), a technology that allows a good optimization of operation and maintenance costs, being suitable for obtaining critical information for an increasingly technical and oenology which needs rigorous data, from acidity, pH or sugar levels, to take decisions that are reflected in superior quality wines».

For Carlos Gracias, president of CVA, this laboratory «came to fulfill an aspiration of the sector, as there was no laboratory of this kind in the region. Producers will thus have a tool available, in good time for the analytical determination of the tests necessary for the management of their production”.

Algarve producers are satisfied with the existence of this laboratory, highlighting above all its speed and proximity.

This is the case of João Mariano, from Quinta da Penina, who states that, «despite having an agreement with another laboratory, this one is not from the region and there is always an increased delay in obtaining results, which the one at CVA makes up for» .

Mário Santos, producer at Quinta da Tôr, highlights the importance of «being able to accompany the wines and the grapes, almost at the moment, an important factor for a successful viticulture and oenology».

This laboratory is part of the Algarve Wines & Spirits project, co-financed by CRESC Algarve/Portugal 2020, and promoted by CVA.

Francisco Serra, president of the Algarve's Regional Coordination and Development Commission (CCDR), highlights the laboratory's added value and regional importance.

“Enhancing the transfer of knowledge to companies in the wine sector and guaranteeing the quality and safety of regional products is a determining factor for the development of the agrifood sector, identified as an emerging domain in the Smart Specialization Strategy”, he concludes.
