The VII International Percussion Festival of Portimão and the IV “Encontróbas” will take, from February 9th to 13th, «contagious rhythms» to Portimão.

The International Percussion Festival will bring together prestigious national and international renowned musicians, featuring workshops by Vincent Houdijk (Vibrafone / Netherlands), Maikel Claessens (Tympani and Orchestral Percussion / Netherlands), Ramon Lormans (Marimba / Netherlands), Ludwig Albert (Marimba / Belgium), Vicky Marques (Drums / Portugal), André Rodrigues & Marisa Paulo ( Afro-Mandingue / Portugal), Bomboémia & Miguel Carneiro (Luso-Brazilian Percussion / Portugal) & Tiago Rego (Traditional Portuguese Percussion).

To all this is added another “Encontróbas”, which, in its fourth edition, will bring the Algarve tango group Piazzollíssimo (Portugal), Miguel Leiria (Lisbon National Conservatory), Hugo Santos (Portimão /Portugal) and Gabor Bolba ( Madeira Classical Orchestra / Hungary) to Portimão.

The program includes more than 15 workshops, five concerts and two parades that will be distributed in some of the most emblematic spaces in the city, such as TEMPO – Portimão Municipal Theater, Portimão Museum Auditorium, Manuel Teixeira Gomes House, Portimão Bandstand, Largo da Mó and Praça da Republic.

Registration for the workshops are already open and can be done here

2018 also wins a new bet with the inclusion of workshops dedicated to the “Intercultural Orchestra”, a project promoted by the Academy of Music of Lagos (AML) under the REEI program – Network of Schools for Intercultural Education, for the period 2017 to 2019.

The Intercultural Orchestra will feature guest trainers in partnership with teachers from the percussion class of the Academy of Music in Lagos Vasco Ramalho (Artistic Director of the Festival), Tiago Pires, João Paias and Pedro Branco.

The highlight will be the presentation to the community at the already traditional closing concert of the two initiatives, on February 13th at 21 pm, in the Great Auditorium of TEMPO – Teatro Municipal de Portimão.

After last year's success, the grand opening parade scheduled for February 9th, at 10:30 am, at Praça da República, will once again feature the group “Bomboémia” (Universidade do Minho) and the participation of 530 students from the Pontal School Centre, from the Poeta António Aleixo Schools Group and 100 children from the TiTé Externato, who will parade dressed up to Praça do Município.

On February 13, Carnival Tuesday, at 14:30 pm, it is the turn of the grand closing parade “Batuca no Carnaval”, with various associations from the Municipality of Portimão, in a route that promises to liven up the city center (Largo da Mó , Alameda da República, Rua Direita, Largo da Câmara and Bandstand of Portimão).

Both parades will feature the AML Percussion Orchestra in partnership with the Orquestra Intercultural de Lagos, Lagoa, Portimão and Loulé.

The first night, on February 9th, at 21 pm, in the Grande Auditorium of TEMPO, will be dedicated to traditional Japanese music and the great compositions of the mother of the Keiko Abe marimba.

The stage will be in charge of the Orquestra de Sopros do Algarve, directed by João Rocha, with two great names of the classic marimba Maikel Claessens and Ramon Lormans (Netherlands).

The following day, February 10, at 21 pm, the Great Auditorium of the Municipal Theater of Portimão receives “Musicas do Mundo” with the presentation of the first album by Vasco Ramalho: “Essências de Marimba: Fados & Choros”, which presents themes immortalized by voice of Amália Rodrigues, such as “Ó gente da Minha Terra”, “Coimbra”, “Casa da Mariquinhas”, “Black Boat” passing through the virtuosity of Carlos Paredes.

On the other side of the Atlantic, themes such as “Espinha de Bacalhau” and several choros transcribed for marimba will be featured. It features Tuniko Goulart (guitar), but also special guests: Vicky Marques, on drums, Edu Miranda, on mandolin, Vincent Houdijk, on vibraphone, Dino D'Santiago and César Matoso on voice.

At 21 pm, don't miss the “Chamamento” of Bomboémia (University of Minho) in Largo 00º de Dezembro, in front of TEMPO – Teatro Municipal de Portimão.

On February 11, at 21 pm, the Auditorium of the Portimão Museum will host the Festival's third concert with contemporary music that will bring the Duo Buchla Music Easel & Double Bass, with Miguel Leiria Pereira (Lisbon National Conservatory) on double bass and Armando Teixeira on analog synthesizers.

The project confronts a certain analogical universe of electronic music with the acoustic double bass, having as its starting point the “Buchla Music Easel” synthesizer and revisiting materials that were explored by composers and musicians in the XNUMXth century.

On the night of February 12th, at 19 pm, Casa Manuel Teixeira Gomes receives a night of Sunset Double Bass Romantic: “From Portimão with Love” which will be performed by Ensemble Piazollíssimo, composed of a group of five musicians where the instrumental formation was chosen in the image of the quintet originally created by Piazzolla.

The traditional closing concert with all participants will take place on February 13th, at 21 pm, in the Grande Auditorium of TEMPO, under the artistic direction of Vasco Ramalho (VII FINTPP) and Bruno Vítor (IV ENContróBaiXo). It will bring together the afro-tribal rhythms of André Rodrigues & Marisa Paulo, and a performance by Ludwig Albert and Rodrigo Marques in Marimba, to close the Carnival Tuesday in a big way.
