The UAlg 2017 Career Alumni Award was awarded on the 11th to Élio Vicente, graduated in Marine Biology and Fisheries (1997), in a public ceremony that took place at the José Silvestre Amphitheater of the Instituto Superior de Engenharia (ISE), on the Penha Campus of the University of Algarve .

Élio Vicente is currently Director of External Relations at Zoomarine and President of the Supervisory Board of the Ordem dos Biólogos. He has developed an important work at Zoomarine, since 1994, in favor of education, environmental protection, culture and science.

In a very emotional speech, Élio Vicente introduced himself “as the son of this most noble house, which has already given so much to the Algarve, Portugal, Science, Culture and the training of thousands of alumni that help and will help this country”.

The honoree ended his speech with a commitment and thanks to the University of Algarve: “continue to try to contribute, personally and professionally, to take the name and prestige of our Academy further and higher. I assume this as an added responsibility inherent to your distinction”.

“Many thanks to my house of knowledge, my family of culture and development, of prestige and pride, a family of many truly extraordinary and inspiring men and women; a house to which I greatly respect and owe much, where innovation is always promoted, where you have the courage and daring to think outside the box, where there is respect and admiration for the oldest and most experienced, and where you know how to recognize and support talent and the potential in the younger ones. It was this house, which in his words gave him “a glorious degree in Marine Biology and Fisheries and granted him this immense honor and privilege”, he concluded.

Ignácio Correia, graduated in Graphic Design, received an honorable mention

The jury also considered giving an honorable mention to Ignácio Correia, graduated in Graphic Design (2008). Creator of an online digital marketing platform used by companies worldwide, he also received a nomination for the Portugal Digital Awards in 2017.

Ignácio Correia is responsible for creating the APP, launched in 2017, known as Polka Dots App.

Ignácio Correia dedicated this distinction to his parents and siblings, recalling that he grew up within the family business, Algardata, whose number of employees licensed by UAlg has already reached around 93%.

With a professional career that began at age 16, the honoree considered that it was UAlg that “opened doors and taught him to be self-taught”.

After the award ceremony, the first convivial dinner was held. alumni UAlg, in the canteen of Campus da Penha.

According to the University, it was a moment that «promoted a meeting and interaction between former colleagues and friends» and «fostered the rapprochement of all those who contributed to its growth to the UAlg».

One of the highlights of this dinner was the special participation of Dário Guerreiro, graduated in Documentary and Editorial Sciences by UAlg, better known as “Môce dum Cabréste”. Vlogger, known on the internet through his humorous videos, Dário Guerreiro is also dedicated to stand-up comedy.

The value of the dinner reverted in full to UAlg's Social Action Services Emergency Fund.
