Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi will give a lecture on “The Evangelization of Culture: a challenge and an enormous task”, on the 31st of January, starting at 9:30 am, at the Hotel Alísios, in Albufeira.

The president of the Vatican's Pontifical Council for Culture heads the group of speakers for the initiative “Updating the Clergy of Southern Dioceses” (Algarve, Beja, Évora and Setúbal) which is once again taking place in the Algarve, promoted by the Eleventh consecutive year, by the Superior Institute of Theology of Évora.

Before speaking about the “Evangelization of Culture”, Ravasi presents, on January 30th, a first conference on the theme “Dialogue: the new posture of a Church “in exit””.

In addition to that responsible, the formation days of the southern clergy, on the theme “Challenges for a Church Always Renewing – Secularization, Dialogue, Discernment”, will also feature the intervention of theologian Juan Pablo García, researcher Sérgio Ribeiro Pinto and former European commissioner João de Deus Pinheiro.

On the 29th of this month, Juan Pablo García, a religious of the Trinitarian Order and professor at the Pontifical University of Salamanca, will address the theme “Vatican II, Sign of a Church updated, in a changing world”.

On the 30th of January, Sérgio Ribeiro Pinto, researcher at the Center for Religious History Studies at the Catholic University of Portugal, will speak on “The multiple roots of Secularization in countries with a Christian religious tradition” and João de Deus Pinheiro, former European commissioner and former minister of Foreign Affairs, on “The challenges that Europe and the European project pose to us”.

The “update of the southern clergy” also has two round tables on the theme “Dialogue on various fronts”.

The first will address issues of ethics and life sciences by specialists Michel and Isabel Renaud and interreligious dialogue by Susana Mateus, researcher at the Center for Religious History Studies at the Catholic University of Portugal.

The second will focus on the dimensions of Christians in politics by José Filipe Pinto, researcher and coordinator of the Center for Research in Political Science, International Relations and Security, and on education and teaching by the former president of the National Education Council David Justino.

On the last day, the days ended with a panel on “Positive experiences of dialogue and evangelization in a multicultural, multi-religious and secularized society” made up of representatives of the dioceses.
