The Municipality of Lagos is already part of the “Network of Municipalities for Local Adaptation to Climate Change (RMpALAC)”, within the scope of the “ClimAdaPT.Local” project, promoted by the Portuguese Environment Agency.

Maria Joaquina Matos, Mayor of Lagos, was this Thursday, 23 November, in Loulé, to sign the letter of commitment of the “Network of Municipalities for Local Adaptation to Climate Change”, having also participated in the 2nd RMpALAC General Counsel.

This network, created in December 2016, and of which Loulé is also a part, «aimed at increasing the capacity of municipalities to incorporate climate change adaptation into their policies, instruments and interventions, by facilitating the exchange of experiences between institutions, technicians and specialists and the capacity building of local authorities», explains the Câmara de Lagos.

For example, in July of this year, that municipality presented its Municipal Plan for Adaptation to Climate Change, «which defines a strategy for local adaptation to climate change and an action plan to operationalize it, reducing the vulnerability of the territory and promoting its adaptation and resilience'.

«The territory corresponding to the municipality of Lagos, due to its southern and coastal location, will face major challenges in the future as a result of climate change, with significant implications for natural, social and economic systems being expected», says the Câmara de Lagos.

For this reason, “it is also required, at the municipal level, the rapid definition of an adaptive response that reduces their current and future vulnerability”.

This network, which already has about 30 municipalities, has, for example, the objective of «facilitating the exchange of experiences between municipalities, strengthening current practices and the development of innovative solutions, extending local adaptation practices to more municipalities. ».

In addition to this, «promote the exchange of knowledge and experiences between local authorities, higher education institutions and the scientific and technological system, companies and the associative fabric, at the level of local adaptation» and «manage and expand the information system to support capacity building in adapting to climate change developed within the scope of “ClimaAdaPT.Local”».

The promotion of «international cooperation relations with other networks and structures, facilitating the incorporation of new approaches and solutions and disseminating the practices implemented by Portuguese municipalities» is also an objective.

Finally, the idea is also to “promote the capacity of local authorities, namely elected officials and technicians, in the field of adaptation to climate change at the local level”.
