The photography exhibition “Tochas”, by Vasco Célio and having as motive the branches used by men in the traditional Easter party in São Brás de Alportel, opens on the 9th of December, at 18 pm, at the Municipal Museum of Faro.

«They say (among other hypotheses) that, about two centuries ago, the inhabitants of São Brás de Alportel, faced with the approach of an invading fleet and the danger of looting, destruction and death, resorted to a ruse: to At night, with torches lit in their hands and others in a row nailed to the ground, they convinced the enemy that there were many and prepared, leading him to cancel his landing and continue on his way», tells Artadentro, the promoter of the initiative.

“Since then, this event has been celebrated with joy and exuberance, also with religiosity, with the original torch having been replaced by the symbolic floral torch”, he adds.

What motivated Vasco Célio to make this photographic record was not only this “legend”, but also the “fever of São Brasenses in this annual celebration”, where the male protagonists are wearing “Sunday clothes, serious and convinced, with a floral arrangement in riste, celebrating tradition and life».

The exhibition will run until February 4, 2018, and can be visited from Tuesday to Friday, from 10:00 am to 18:00 pm, and on Saturday and Sunday, from 10:30 am to 17:00 pm, closing on Mondays and holidays.

This exhibition is part of the contemporary art cycle “Um Certo Ponto de Vista”, which is part of the 365Algarve.

During the opening, there will be a tasting of wines produced in the Algarve, provided by the CVA – Algarve Wine Commission.

Vasco Célio was born in Lubango, Angola, where, as a newborn, he came with his family to Portugal.

Since then, he has lived and worked in Loulé, in the Algarve, a region where he has established himself as a professional photographer and artist.
