The construction work of the third cell of the Sotavento Sanitary Landfill, located in Cortelha (Loulé), has already started.

According to Algar, responsible for the works, «construction was already planned within the scope of the initial project of the landfill, namely, in the second phase of its implementation, with the purpose of expanding the capacity for depositing undifferentiated waste collected in the Sotavento districts. Algarve».

«The new cell, which is being built using the best available techniques for environmental preservation, in order to guarantee the waterproofing of the soil and the protection of aquifers, will allow for the reception of approximately 130 thousand tons of waste per year, providing for if a useful life in operation of 10 years», he adds.

The environmental protection system at the bottom of the cell is composed of a basal regularization layer, with an average thickness of 50 centimeters, bentonite geocomposite, high density polyethylene geomembrane, 2 millimeters thick, non-woven geotextile, 500 grams per square meter (mechanical protection), and a draining layer 50 centimeters thick.

The slopes are composed of: basal regularization layer with an average thickness of 50 centimeters, bentonitic geocomposite, high density polyethylene geomembrane, 2 millimeters thick and non-woven geotextile of 500 grams per square meter (mechanical protection);

At the bottom of the cell «there will be a drainage network to capture the effluents produced, which will be sent for treatment at the Leachate Treatment Station».

"As the cell is being explored, biogas drains will be built, which will allow the degassing of the mass of waste and subsequent capture for the production of electricity," says Algar.

This contract, valued at 4 million euros, should be completed within a maximum period of 16 months, with the expectation, with this investment, to obtain a storage volume of 1,2 million cubic meters for the disposal of waste.
