On 11 October, the Maritime Police in Lagos seized a metal detector that was being used by a foreigner on Salema beach.

The use of metal detectors in the search for objects and artefacts relevant to history, art, numismatics or archeology is prohibited.

The use and transport of unlicensed metal detectors for research purposes in classified monuments and archaeological sites or in the course of classification is also prohibited.

According to the National Maritime Authority, "it is incumbent upon the member of the Government for the area of ​​culture, through the body responsible for protecting cultural heritage, to authorize, through the granting of a license, the use of metal detectors, depending on the objectives to be achieved, the locations to be prospected and the scientific suitability of the interested party'.
