The international conference “An alert for online fraud in the tourism industry” will take place on the 9th of November, from 9:30 am, at the Algarve Hotel and Tourism School, in Faro.

“Fraud is a growing crime in the tourist industry and has been affecting the rental of houses, the purchase of airline tickets and generating false reports of food poisoning, among other types of fraud. The impact for hoteliers, operators and travel agents is high”, explains the president of the association Safe Communities Portugal (SCP), promoter of the initiative, David Thomas.

This initiative thus intends to debate the risks and present preventive measures to reduce the number of frauds and their impact on tourist activity. The conference will also present suggestions to improve the construction of sites and the management of social networks in the area of tourist accommodation, in order to make them safer.

The event supported by TUI and the School of Hotel and Tourism of Portugal, in Faro, brings together experts from the country's various security forces (PSP, GNR, ASAE, SEF ,CNCS – National Cybersecurity Centre), representatives of consumer associations, EUROPOL, Prevention of Fraud in Travel and other entities in the tourism sector.

For Desidério Silva, president of the Algarve Tourism Region (RTA), "the tourism sector is booming in the country and therefore attracts everyone's attention as the number of overnight stays and income increases."

«The tendency to commit tourist fraud may thus be greater, especially in the area of cybercrime, due to the fast nature of the Internet and the anonymity that it gives users. This conference comes at a good time, as it will allow us to debate fraud and find defense mechanisms to prevent it», he considers.

Free entry, participation in the conference requires mandatory registration, via email [email protected], until November 6th. The event runs until 17:30 pm and will be in English and Portuguese.
