The 4th International Guitar Festival of Lagoa, which brings to the county some of the great masters of the execution of this musical instrument, starts this Sunday, 17th of September, and continues until 22nd of October, organized by the Câmara de Lagoa, in partnership with the Algarve Guitar Association (AGA).

In the year in which Lagoa has as its motto “The Heritage, Looking at the Past, Towards the Future”, concerts begin today, the 17th, outdoors, at the Nossa Senhora da Encarnação Amphitheater, in Carvoeiro, with Paco Seco and Daniel Pereira Christ, joining singing and cavaquinho.

Next is the promontory of Nossa Senhora da Rocha (September 24th – Nihz Duo and Edu Miranda Trio), the Municipal Auditorium (September 30th – Bruno Batista), the Estômbar Mother Church (October 8th – Duo Frédéric Bernard & Arnaud Dumond and Ellipsis Trio) and again the Municipal Auditorium, with performances by Manuel Toucinho and Ricardo Silva Trio (14th October) and G Plus Ensemble and Ximo Tebar Quartet, to close on the 22nd of next month.

This Sunday, the 17th, at 16 pm, in the amphitheater next to the chapel of Nossa Senhora da Encarnação, in Carvoeiro, and opening the festival, the second of the three works commissioned to local history researcher João Vasco Reis will be presented, within the scope of commemorations of the year of the “Heritage Looking at the Past Towards the Future”, entitled “Between Walls and Watches – Castles, Fortresses and other defensive systems of the Municipality of Lagoa”. The presentation will be given by Valdemar Coutinho, Master in History of the Discoveries and Portuguese Expansion by the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences of Universidade Nova de Lisboa.

In this book, João Vasco Reis reveals the relevant role of Lagoa in maritime defense, given the geographic situation of its coastline.

In the work, the author describes legends, human dramas, facts, episodes and rumors lived on the Algarve coast from the eastern limit of the county to the Arade River, passing through Porches Velho and Novo, Crastos, Nossa Senhora da Rocha, Albandeira, Benagil, Carvalho , Alfanzina, Carvoeiro, Vale da Lapa, Ponta do Altar, S. João do Arade, Ferragudo, Mexilhoeira da Carregação and Estômbar.

The Guitar Festival program also includes a Master Class, to "encourage learning" of the instrument, as Francisco Martins, president of the Chamber and responsible for Culture, points out.

Following the presentation of the book, the 4th International Guitar Festival of Lagoa begins, with performances by Paco Seco and Daniel Cristo, at 17 pm, at the Anfiteatro de Carvoeiro.

Paco Seco is one of the most virtuous guitarists in Spain. Versatile and creative, it has a unique technique: A fusion between the crystalline notes of the classical guitar and the agility and instinctive passion of the flamenco guitar.

His music took him to the National Theater in London, Mediterranean Music Festival in Genoa, Sevdah Festival in Sarajevo, Doetinchem Festival in Buitengewoon in Holland, Belém Cultural Center in Lisbon, Music Festival in Tangier, Circle of Fine Arts in Madrid, International Music and Dance Festival in Granada, Elk Music Festival in Poland, Real Alcazar in Seville, among others.

He has played in Croatia, Poland, Czech Republic, Bosnia, India, Morocco, Netherlands, England, Italy, France, Spain and Portugal.

Since a very early age, traditional instruments, and chordophones in particular, have been part of the existence and music of Daniel Pereira Christ.

His solo journey begins with a challenge coming from Galicia and with the invitation of Júlio Pereira, to make a record work, with the seal of Associação Museu Cavaquinho, which would combine Canto with Cavaquinho.

It is from «all this amalgamation of experiences and experiences» that comes this concert “Cavaquinho Cantado” – with Diogo Riço, on bandola and guitar, André No, on percussions, and David Estêvão, on double bass, who are joined by Catarina Valadas, on voice and transverse flute, and André Ramos, on the braguesa guitar.

The concert is characterized by «the joy of joining the two old acquaintances, the song and the cavaquinho, as central characters of a whole that is intended to be felt as a new and contemporary approach to music and instruments of identity», describes the Chamber of Lagoon.

In other words, «Ethnic Music of the Portuguese and Peninsular Northwest», as Daniel Cristo likes to call it. Music production is in charge of the technician and multi-instrumentalist Hélder Costa.

Admission is free.
