The “Calcinha” autumn menu offers the best of traditional cuisine

Corn porridge, a cod fish stew or chickpea dinner, in the mountain way, but with an unlikely ingredient: pears. Here are some of the dishes on the autumn menu of the emblematic Café Calcinha, in Loulé, available from 25 September, based on the «origins» of its curator: Jesus Dias.

The dishes, all traditional, are the choice of Jesus Dias, former owner of the popular restaurant “Moinho da Ti Casinha” in Querença.

«In this menu, I present my origins. These are the dishes I found in my grandmother's or my neighbors' kitchens. This is what represents me», explained the curator, at the menu presentation dinner, for which the Sul Informação was invited, which took place this Tuesday.

In total, there will be four dishes, to be presented from Tuesday to Friday, until the beginning of January. So… there's still one left. Which will be? A cherry chicken, a typical Loulé delicacy, served with sweet potatoes and rice. And to cherry means nothing more than "letting it brown".

Take note: on Tuesdays will be hen day, on Wednesdays the dish to be served is the corn porridge and on Thursdays the “dinner” of grain. To close, on Friday, cod fish stew. The cost is always the same: 6 euros.

When Bruno Inácio, also a native of Querença and one of the new owners of “Calcinha”, invited Jesus Dias to be the curator of this “gastronomic station”, the response was immediately positive. "He told me: I can't refuse such an invitation," he said.

That emblematic space has always been a meeting point in the city of Loulé. This gastronomic component that the coffee will gain will serve to enhance this characteristic. «The “Calcinha” will never be a restaurant, but it is a place where people can come and eat different dishes from those found elsewhere», said Bruno Inácio.

Also for this reason, the menus, which will change according to the season, reflect “what regional cuisine is”, using seasonal products.

Maria Paula, better known as Isabel, is in charge of the kitchen at “Calcinha”. Although the dishes are chosen by Jesus Dias, she will be the one who will cook them every day. "I hope that with this we have more demand", he told the Sul Informação.

The same idea has Jesus Dias. "I hope everyone likes it and that this brings a lot of people to the cafe."

But “Calcinha” does not want its initiatives to be exhausted in gastronomy. Also at this dinner, the extensive cultural program for the autumn season was presented. For example, on the 30th of September, World Music Day, there is a concert by “Moçoilas”, starting at 17 pm.

The 16th of November is the anniversary of the death of the poet António Aleixo, the most reputable frequenter of “Calcinha”, and the café will not let the date go unnoticed. To this end, there will be a look at the António Aleixo Foundation and testimonies of people who were helped by that institution.

Still in November, but for the 19th, a clarinet concert is scheduled by Petro Moroi, at 17:00. This is an initiative that comes after a challenge from Joaquim Guerreiro, recently deceased.
