The 26th World Championship “Big Game Trolling”, sport fishing, takes place from 16 to 23 September, in Albufeira, and will have 150 athletes, from 23 teams, representing 15 countries. 

Some of these teams are from Slovenia, South Africa, Italy, Angola, Portugal, Spain, Austria, England, Switzerland, France, Brazil, Germany, Croatia, France and Mexico.

This is «one of the most important competitions in the sport», according to the City Council of Albufeira, with the competition also including a social program, which will give sporting delegations the opportunity to get to know the municipality of Albufeira.

 

«It is with great pleasure that we welcome, in Albufeira, this year's edition of the World Championship of Big Game Trolling. This is an event of great international dimension, which constitutes yet another contribution to the value of our city as a tourist center of excellence», considers Carlos Silva e Sousa, mayor of Albufeira.

The mayor praises the dynamism of the team that supports this project and highlights the set of assets in terms of infrastructure and natural conditions in Albufeira.

“We are certain that the competition will be a great success. Albufeira is a city that likes to welcome and likes to treat those who visit us well. Therefore, I welcome all participants in this Championship, whether athletes, organization or family members and companions», concluded the mayor.

The fishing zone comprises the area between Tavira and Sagres up to 55 nautical miles from the coast. Athletes will be able to catch only some species of fish, such as Marlin Azul, Marlim Branco, Big Eye Tuna, blue fin tuna e Gold, which must be returned to the sea after the entire fishing process has been documented through filming.

«Albufeira has all the conditions to organize these events, characterized by the richness of its fauna, stable weather conditions and a good number of vessels equipped with very experienced crews. In addition to the competition itself, we will organize a social program for companions so that they can get to know and enjoy the city of Albufeira and the beauty of the Algarve», stressed Carlos Vinagre, president of the Portuguese Federation of Sport Fishing in the High Seas (FPPDAM).

The International Federation of Sport Fishing (FIPS-M) will provide the medals to the top three nations (five medals per nation), while the organization will award a trophy for each of the top three classified per nation, one prize for each of the top three skippers and a prize for the fisherman with the highest number of billfish points.
