The municipality of Alcoutim is going to celebrate the «uniqueness, sublimity and versatility» of the Indian fig tree and its fruit, with two competitions and some technical conferences, to be held between August and November.
Thus, the events to be held are the 2nd WorldLand photographic contest Opuntia ficus-indica, the 3rd Opuntia ficus-indica Technical Journeys in Alcoutim and the 7th contest “Aromas and Flavors with prickly pear”.
The Alcoutim Municipality – Figo Capital of India event is organized by Alcoutim City Council and Martim Longo Parish Council, in collaboration with CGFI – Confraria Gastronomica do Figo and Figueira-da-India, ADECMAR – Development Association Cultural Ethnographic of Martim Longo, APROFIP – Association of Fig Producers of India of Portugal and CRCL – Centro Recreativo e Cultural do Laborato.
August and September are the harvest months of the prickly pear and the “arrival” «of this sweet and succulent fruit is reason for celebration», says the Municipality of Alcoutim.
The program of activities «includes the tasting of innovative recipes made with prickly pear, an invitation to photography lovers and the presence of internationally renowned experts, who will be in Alcoutim to debate, deepen and promote the fig tree and the prickly pear as endogenous products of great importance in the context of the region's development», he concludes.
