The Independent Union of Doctors (SIM-Algarve) went public to defend that the «huge shortage of human resources in the Emergency Service of Hospitals in Faro and Portimão and in the SUBs of Loulé and Albufeira” is not “compassionate with supposed cyclical solutions”, requiring “structuring decisions”, for the whole year.

In a press release expressing "deep concern for the current situation reached by the Hospital Center of the Algarve (CHA)", the union considered "unacceptable that, after several warnings from the respective responsible for the Services, little has been done to resolve the problems mentioned'.

Sim-Algarve released this public position days after the creation of the Hospital and University Center of the Algarve (CHUA), which will replace the CHA, having been approved by the Council of Ministers.

Union members never refer to the imminent entry into force of this new model for hospitals in the Algarve, but nevertheless, they do not fail to make clear what is their vision for the future of the Algarve's National Health Service.

«The resolution of the calamitous situation that has been reached is not compatible with alleged cyclical solutions. Structural decisions are needed and that solve problems for the whole year, not just for the summer and not just for “tourists to see”».

“There is, therefore, an imperative need to strengthen staff with medical professionals, integrated into their respective careers. […] The Algarvians are not second class citizens. The Algarve is too important for small and limiting decisions», concluded the SIM-Algarve.
