Laura Estevens, a swimmer at the Olhão Swimming Club, became the national champion of 200 meters breaststroke in Infantis B, in the National Championship of the sport, which was disputed last weekend at the Loulé Municipal Swimming Pools.

According to the Chamber of Olhão, which congratulates the 12-year-old athlete, «after having broken the regional record at the XNUMXst Meeting of Youth in the Algarve, which took place last May in Quarteira, the National Championship represented another successful stage in the still short career of this young promise from Olhano».

It was during the session on Saturday, and competing with 29 other athletes, that Laura Estevens reached the title of national champion, by covering the 200 meters breaststroke in 2.56,15 minutes.

After being national champion on Saturday, on Sunday the swimmer also managed to break a regional record in the 400 meters styles. The mark, which had not been beaten since 2004, now stands at 5.43,58 minutes.

The Mayor, António Miguel Pina, salutes the athlete for yet another achievement: «it is with great satisfaction that we have been following Laura's path, and we hope that she continues to carry the name of Olhão further and further. The generalized sporting practice, competition, or merely recreational, is one of the aspects to which we attach fundamental importance and we have always encouraged, and increasingly more accentuated, due to the physical and psychological benefits that it entails. Athletes like Laura are examples to follow».
