Maintenance and restoration work on the green spaces of the municipality of Portimão, covering a total of 200 square meters (20 hectares), will begin "in the next few days", announced the Municipality of this Algarve city.

Urbanization Quinta das Oliveiras, Urbanização da Bemposta, Urbanização Nurial, Urbanização Quinta da Ouriva are examples of around 100 locations identified by the municipality, mostly in residential areas, to recover and maintain green spaces, for a period of one year.

Budgeted at more than 600.000 euros, these works are the result of an international public tender, started in December 2016, which, given the amounts involved, had a procedural period of more than six months, explains the municipality.

The Portimão Chamber recognizes, in a press release, that "these works are extremely important, given the current state of most of the municipality's green spaces."

He recalls, however, that "as of 2010, the existing contracts were terminated or were not renewed after the period of validity has expired, and the municipality began to ensure, with great difficulty, the maintenance of green spaces using its own resources, which are very scarce" .

The municipality of Portimo adds that "it was only possible to launch this tender from the moment the financial recovery plan of the municipality was approved by the Court of Auditors", since "until that date the CMP was legally prevented from doing so".

The works in question aim, in a first phase, to clean and restore green spaces, then continuing with the maintenance of the new plant species that will be introduced.
