An unprecedented surgery, performed for the first time in Portugal, to correct the middle third of the face with an external distractor, was performed at the Hospital Particular de Gambelas, in Faro.

This announcement was made this Friday, June 30, by Grupo Hospital Particular do Algarve (HPA).

“The patient has a rare disease – Acrodysostosis – where the extremities do not ossify correctly, producing an important functional and aesthetic incapacity”, explains the HPA.

According to the responsible surgeons, David Sanz (maxillofacial surgeon) and David Ângelo (stomatologist), this surgery "is technically complex, but the very rigorous planning that we carried out in 3D allowed us to reduce surgical risks and predict the final result".

Thus, two osteotomies were performed (cut in the bone) and a distractor was placed, which will be activated every day, producing a progressive advancement of the bone and soft tissue at the rate of 1 millimeter per day, thus projecting the entire center of the face.

This technique allows you to make large bone movements without compromising the adnexal tissues. “At the end of the seven and a half hours of surgery, the team and family were very satisfied with the results,” concludes the HPA.
