The mayor of Olhão António Pina went public to express his satisfaction with the award of the preliminary study for the construction of the Olhão bypass to Estrada Nacional 125, announced yesterday, June 7th, by Infraestruturas de Portugal.

“This is another great victory for this executive and one of the battles we have been fighting militantly over the last few years. We consider it of capital importance for the development of Olhão as a city and municipality that this territory has an effective alternative to National Road 125, which crosses the city, with the consequent constraints on car and pedestrian traffic», considered the mayor from Olhão.

The Olhão bypass was one of the works that was removed from the plans, after the renegotiation of the Rotas do Algarve Litoral concession, carried out by the previous government. António Pina accuses Passos Coelho's executive of letting the work “fall into oblivion”, assuring that it was “with a lot of effort” that he put it back on the agenda.

“There were many contacts, many meetings, many hours of waiting, many promises that we took. These were worthwhile efforts, since, in the near future, Olhão will have this structuring path”, illustrated the mayor of Olhão.

The Municipality of Olhão recalls that, according to Infraestruturas de Portugal, which was responsible for the requalification of the EN125 between Olhão and VRSA, «this is one of the interventions defined as priorities to be carried out on the EN125, which will be carried out along the stretch between Olhão and Vila Real de Santo António, with a view to improving the fluidity and safety of road and pedestrian circulation, providing the EN125 with a high level of quality service, in keeping with a region of excellent tourism such as the Algarve today ».

“The future variant will have a length of about six kilometers, one lane per direction, and will take advantage of several existing municipal sections. Along this route, seven roundabouts will be built in conjunction with the local road network, thus ensuring the improvement of urban mobility and accessibility to the Port of Olhão, facilitating the movement of passengers and goods. The construction of the Olhão bypass involves an estimated investment of around 5 million euros», summarized the municipality.

The route “was agreed between IP and the municipality, and represents a solution that will ensure a strong improvement in mobility and cohesion of the urban fabric”.
