Vila Real de Santo António (VRSA) will celebrate the 243 years of its foundation on Saturday, May 13th, with a program that includes music, a historical recreation, an ethnographic procession, sport and tributes.

The highlights of the program are the Historical and Ethnographic Parade that will tour the city's streets, starting at 18 pm next to the Municipal Historical Archive, a fado show that will bring together the artists Elsa Jerónimo, Nádia Catarro and Renato Nené (Praça Marquês de Pombal, 00 pm) and the play «O Incêndio», by the II Acto theater company, a historical recreation that recalls the 21 fire that took place in Paços do Concelho (30:1908).

On Saturday, the day, in VRSA, begins with the traditional Flag Flag at 9:00 am, followed by the inauguration of the «Adventure Park» project at the VRSA Sports Complex.

At 10 am the Solemn Commemorative Session of the VRSA Foundation begins, at the António Aleixo Cultural Centre, during which the new graphic identity of the beach will be presented. Monte Gordo and the transition of the presidency of the Eurocity of Guadiana (composed of the municipalities of Ayamonte, Castro Marim and VRSA) to the municipality of VRSA will be marked.

The ceremony will also serve to honor various honored Vila-Realian personalities, including cyclist Amaro Antunes, referee Nuno Almeida, historian Hugo Cavaco and historian and academic Horta Correia.

«The “Splash” dance school will also be distinguished for its representation across borders; the Lusitano Futebol Clube, on the occasion of its centenary; the Cantar de Amigos group; the municipality's police forces, as well as the media with headquarters in the municipality, namely Jornal do Algarve and Rádio Guadiana», according to the Chamber of VRSA.

During the ceremony, merit diplomas will also be awarded to the best students and municipal employees with 18 or more years of service.

From here, the party goes out into the street. At 17 pm, the VRSA Sports Complex will host the «Amizade Centenário» football tournament, which will pit Lusitano FC, CD Beja and Vitória de Setúbal. In the same place, the veterans tournament will be held, which will put the Padel Clube de VRSA and the veterans of Beira Mar face to face.

Cultural initiatives followed, namely the parade, concert and historical recreation. On Saturday, the Historic Fair is also inaugurated, «with a set of period recreations and the sale of handicrafts and typical products», which can be visited until Sunday, May 14th, at Praça Marquês de Pombal, between 10 am and 00:23
