Ana Ben Ami, co-founder and designer from the clothing brand Purple, and Vincent Jonckheere, canning artisan and one of the creators of Conserveira do Arade (Saboreal brand), are the guests of BetaTalk This month, which has interculturality as its motto, to be held on Tuesday, May 16, at 19 pm, at the café-concert of TEMPO – Teatro Municipal de Portimão.

This conversation, «which will have a Belgian and Angolan accent at its heart», will serve for entrepreneurs to share their stories and experiences, in which «the crossing and valuing of cultures gave rise to an innovative vision and new business opportunities», says the Portimão Chamber.

This is because Ana Ben Ami was born in Angola, she is the daughter of an Algarvian mother and an Angolan father and came to Portugal in 1975, at the age of 7, adopting Portimão as her birthplace.

16 years ago, he met Oded Ben Ami, an Israeli emigrant, and together they created, in 2009, the clothing and accessories brand purple, headquartered in Portimão.

The brand concept emerged from the various cultures existing in Europe, bringing a style to Portugal beachwear, with Arab, African and even Portuguese origins, in a fusion of styles and cultures.

Spread across Spain, Portugal, the Swiss Alps and the islands, the Purple has as a country of confection of the beach line and fitness Brazil and India from clothes.

Ana Ben Ami and her husband live in Portimão, with Ana assuming the role of designer/brand stylist, which is on sale online and resale is his big bet, after having already had some physical stores throughout the region.

Today, names like Merche Romero (pictured), Joana Duarte, Patrícia Candoso, Joana Alvarenga and Diana Monteiro already wear Purple.

As for Vincent Jonckheere (35 years old), he is of Belgian nationality and left his profession as a hotel manager and economics professor in Belgium to become a canning artisan in Portugal.

«Passionate about Portuguese culture and history, after a visit to the Museum of Portimão, as a tourist on holiday in the Algarve, he decided to bet on the recovery of the canning industry in the Arade Basin», tells the Portimão Town Council.

After three years of research, which involved several visits to various types of canning, fish and vegetable factories, the bet would be to radically produce canned fish.

In July 2015, in partnership with two Portuguese, Conserveira do Arade was born and the first production under the Saboreal brand, about which the Sul Informação then made the first report.

«Currently, being the only factory operating in the Barlavento Algarvio, Conserveira do Arade stands out for its quality and innovation, combined with tradition and the use of fresh local products», considers the municipality of Portimo.

In December 2016, it received the Trophée des Belges du bout du monde (Belgian trophy around the world), «in the economy category, a distinction that emphasizes the innovation and capacity of Portuguese companies to create interest outside the country. Today, the brand takes the tradition and cultural wealth of the Algarve canning industry farther and farther”, he adds.

This BetaTalk it is also inspired by the Intercultural Week that Portimão is preparing to live from the 22nd to the 29th of May.
