Marco Sousa Santos, author of the work “Contributions to the History of Slavery in the Algarve during the Modern Period (1444-1773)”, received, this Monday, 22 May, the “National Prize for Historical Essay António Rosa Mendes”, Vila Real de Santo António City Council, in the amount of 10 thousand euros.

The work was awarded, taking into account the historiographical merit revealed.

The jury also decided to award honorable mentions to the works “Ferragudo: a local economy in the Algarve of the seventeenth century”, by David Eduardo Vicente Roque and “A Mesa da Consciência e Ordens so understood. Information on qualifications and provisions (XNUMXth century)”, by Nelson Vaquinhas.

This competition, launched as part of a tribute by the municipality of VRSA and the Algarve academy to the Vila Realense António Rosa Mendes, who died in 2013, was intended to reward the best unprecedented historical essay in the modality, with a free theme, but limited to the period of Modern age.

The panel of judges included Joaquim Romero Magalhães (University of Coimbra), José Esteves Pereira (New University of Lisbon), José Eduardo Horta Correia (University of Algarve), Luís Filipe Oliveira (University of Algarve) and architect José Carlos Barros ( Municipal Assembly of Vila Real de Santo António).

For Luís Gomes, Mayor of VRSA, «this competition, unprecedented in the country, honors the name and legacy of António Rosa Mendes and makes the municipality a national reference in terms of promoting culture and historical research».

The awards ceremony was attended by the mayor of VRSA Luís Gomes, de Conceição Cabrita, vice president of the municipality, the president of the Municipal Assembly of VRSA and member of the jury José Carlos Barros, by Alexandra Gonçalves, director Regional Culture of the Algarve, and Paulo Águas, vice-rector of the University of Algarve.

«A native of VRSA, António Rosa Mendes was an emeritus professor, respected and admired by students and colleagues and by the entire community of his relations, having contributed to boost scientific research on the History of the Algarve», says the Chamber of VRSA.

During his life, he was "publicly recognized as a man of integrity, cultured, humanist, detached, humble, with character, principles and civic courage, having his roots in the Algarve marked all his academic, social and political intervention", he concludes.
