It has been 25 years of training students, but the demand is not lower. The Tourism and Hotel Management courses of the Superior School of Management, Hospitality and Tourism (ESGHT) of the University of the Algarve completed a quarter of a century, a goal that was marked this Friday, April 21, in a session that took place on the premises of the University. UAlg's organic unit.

A time of life that, both for Hélder Carrasqueira, director of ESGHT, and for António Branco, dean of the Algarve university, proves “the success” of these two courses, which continue to show great power of attraction.

«We offer 120 places for the Tourism course, which runs in Faro and Portimão, to which 45 are added to the Hotel Management course, which is only taught here in Penha. As a rule, vacancies run out and, normally, we have a demand three times higher than the vacancies we have opened», revealed Hélder Carrasqueira, speaking to the Sul Informação.

The interest of young candidates for Higher Education is not unrelated to the high output of the two courses. “We have an employability rate of around 95 percent. In other words, there is an almost marginal rate, of 5 percent, of unemployment, which disappears when the high season arrives. We are at the highest levels in the country, for homologous courses», added the ESGHT director.

«These 25 years are a long journey, which attests to the capacity of affirmation of the courses. We have already trained many students, many of them in the labor market today, some in prominent positions», he said.

Two of these former students who stood out, at a professional level, attended the commemorative session of the 25th anniversary of ESGHT. Nuno Fazenda and Rui Maria, who occupy positions of directors at Turismo de Portugal and Grupo Pestana, respectively, were invited to make technical presentations related to the tourism sector, but ended up speaking, too, as alumni of the house, recalling his academic path.

And these are just two examples among the thousands of students who graduated in these two areas, at UAlg. According to António Branco, over the course of 25 years, more than 4500 students entered these courses, of which 2700 completed their training.

«These students are recruited across the country, with these courses managing to resist the regionalization process in access to Higher Education that has taken place all over the country», illustrated the head of UAlg, during the session.

António Branco also highlighted the ability of the two courses to «interpret well what polytechnic education is», introducing «a strong practical component» in the curriculum, and to produce «highly specialized research», as well as «good relationship it maintains with companies».

The ceremony also served to honor all the directors of the two courses, since their creation, as well as the 10 companies that provided the most internships in 25 years of history of UAlg's Tourism and Hotel Management courses, which received medals that the Secretary of State for Science, Technology and Higher Education helped deliver.
