Hipólito Nzwalo, professor at the Department of Biomedical Sciences and Medicine at the University of Algarve, was unanimously awarded the Research Grant on Cerebral Vascular Diseases, for last year, awarded by the Portuguese Society of Cerebral Vascular Diseases.

The winning project, entitled “Influence of meteorological and environmental changes on the circadian, circaseptane and circannual distribution of intracerebral hemorrhage in the Algarve”, has Hipólito Nzwalo as principal investigator.

This work aims to verify whether variations (daily, weekly and monthly) in temperature and pollution levels are associated with a greater risk of a hemorrhagic cerebrovascular accident (CVA).

There are some studies that already show that drops in temperature and high levels of certain air pollutants can actually increase the risk of hemorrhagic stroke. “We intend not only to identify this association, but also to try to understand who are the people most vulnerable to risk. Recognizing the risk, we are in a better position to advise and influence prevention behaviors», explains the researcher.

Collaborating with the University of Algarve, since 2010, as supervisor of several degree works in Biomedical Sciences, and, since 2012, as a visiting professor in the Medicine course, Hipólito Nzwalo recognizes that this award, «in addition to financially enabling the execution of all phases of the study, is an unmistakable sign of confidence in the work being carried out”.

Hipólito Nzwalo has a degree in Medicine from the Eduardo Mondlane University in Mozambique, a Master's in Sleep Sciences, from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon, and a Ph.D. in Neuroscience from the Norwegian BergenUniversity.
