Faro, Loulé, Lagoa and Portimão will join the “Earth Hour”, which runs from 20:30 pm to 21:30 pm this Saturday, March 25th. Faro, and the walls of the Castle of Loulé will have their lights turned off.

Also in the capital of the Algarve, the lights will be turned off at Largo da Sé, Jardim Manuel Bivar, Paços do Concelho Building and Civil Government Building.

In Lagoa, the City Council will turn off the lights in public spaces, inviting the «population to do the same in their homes and private establishments».

“Earth Hour” is a global environmental initiative by World Wild Fund for Nature (WWF), founded in 1961, which invites individuals, businesses, governments and communities to turn off the light for one hour.

The event has as ambassadors personalities such as Leonor Poeiras, Nuno Markl or Diana Bouça-Nova. In addition, at Parque Eduardo VII, in Lisbon, there will be the official event of “Earth Hour”, with a solidarity concert by candlelight, from 20 pm, with voices such as Raquel Tavares, Matias Damásio, Tiago Bettencourt, André Sardet, Tito Paris, Samuel Uria, Enoch and Janeiro. The profits from this concert revert to the WWF and its projects in Portugal.

As for municipalities in Alentejo, Cuba and Ferreira do Alentejo are the representatives, for now, of the district of Beja. In Ferreira do Alentejo, the lights of Nossa Senhora da Conceição Church will be turned off.

In total, 101 municipalities have already joined this “Earth Hour”: Abrantes, Águeda, Alfandega da Fé, Almeirim, Alvito, Amarante, Anadia, Angra do Heroísmo, Ansião, Avis, Barcelos, Batalha, Benavente, Boticas, Bragança , Cabeceiras de Basto, Cadaval, Calheta, Castelo de Paiva, Celorico da Beira, Chamusca, Chaves, Coimbra, Condeixa-a-Nova, Coruche, Corvo, Cuba, Elvas, Espada à Cinta, Esposende, Faro, Ferreira do Alentejo, Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo, Funchal and Góis.

These are joined by: Gondomar, Grândola, Lagoa, Lajes das Flores, Lajes das Flores, Lajes do Pico, Loulé, Loures, Lousã, Lousada, Manteigas, Marinha Grande, Miranda do Corvo, Miranda do Douro, Moimenta da Beira, Montemor -o- Velho, Nazaré, Odivelas, Oliveira de Azeméis, Oliveira de Frades, Ourém, Ovar, Pedrogão Grande, Penacova, Pombal, Ponte da Barca, Ponte de Lima, Portimão and Porto Moniz.

Finally, the municipalities of Porto Santo, Praia da Vitória, Reguengos de Monsaraz, Ribeira Grande, Rio Maior, Sabugal, Salvaterra de Magos, Santa Cruz, Santa Maria da Feira, Santa Marta de Penaguião, Santarém, Santo are also part of the initiative. Despite the number, the WWF expects this year's edition to have a record number of Portuguese municipalities, surpassing 118 in 2015.
