“We are also 2017 years old in XNUMX, like the apparitions of Our Lady of Fatima. Let's hope there is a miracle,” said José Lezinho, from the Hangares Residents Association.
Today, Thursday, the administrative takeover of houses in this nucleus of Ilha da Culatra, in Faro, was surrounded by an atmosphere of great tension, but also by the public expression of faith of some inhabitants, who received Polis technicians to pray the rosary.
Similar to what happened last week, at the core of the Farol, the population gathered to protest against the takeover of the houses marked for demolition. And, despite the fact that, in Hangares, there are fewer houses to go below than in the Farol, the protest was even stronger in this nucleus and more numerous the protesters – about two hundred.
It was also notorious that many of those who insisted on being present at the protests in the Farol, a week ago, they returned to the Hangares today. Perhaps because they already knew what to count on, the contestation was more organized, which made the progression of the Polis technicians and the elements of the Maritime Police who escorted them slower and, at times, more difficult.
“We were afraid that this would happen, that this would fall apart a bit. Tempers rose a bit and we, together with the Maritime Police, tried to calm them down. But people, old and young, were raised here and are attached to things», illustrated José Lezinho, who accompanied the operation and served as a link between the population and the authorities.
Despite this, Commander Pedro Palma, naval officer responsible for communication in this operation, considered that the people "accepted the indications of the Maritime Police", even taking into account the resistance that was raised by the population to take possession of the houses.
“There was more emotion in the air. There were four people assisted, because of high tension and anxiety. But it never came to physical violence," said Pedro Palma, justifying situations in which there was direct contact between the Maritime Police and the population with "the need to remove people from above the walls," a situation that "puts them at risk."
If, on the population side, there was time to fine-tune the strategy, so did the elements of the Polis studied the lesson and they found more expeditious ways of painting the houses with a number in blue and affixing the inaugural edicts, even if, in between, there had been some mistakes.
“For us, there was a bad start and this is a bad ending. The Polis Society is doing a poor job, although there is already dialogue. But they are picking up on an old process, full of vices and being mishandled. They said they knew the land, but there were houses that were wrongly marked. Only when they asked the association for help was the thing corrected», said José Lezinho.
This Thursday, the Polis Ria Formosa Society took administrative possession of 19 of the 24 houses initially planned, in Hangares. In the coming days, two of these administrative acts will be suspended, as there are two injunctions that have already been filed, but about which the Polis had not yet been notified.
“But there are things that are still wrong. There is a house that is marked because of 30 centimeters, and a backyard area. Where appropriate, the person removes the yard. There are things that could be resolved», believes the leader of the Association of Residents of Hangares.
The demolitions in the cores of the FaroXNUMX and the Hangars of Ilha da Culatra should advance in about a month.
