Castro Marim City Council is going to receive a contribution from European Union funds to carry out a project worth almost 4 million euros, which will make it possible to supply mains water to 28 villages in the municipality.

The Castromarinense municipality submitted an application to the Operational Program for Sustainability and Efficiency in the Use of Resources (PO SEUR), which has now been approved.

With the execution of this project, which aims to guarantee the supply of this essential good «to about 50% of the people still without a home water supply», the Chamber of Castro Marim says that it will be possible to bring water «in quantity and quality» to the populations of rural parishes that were not yet served.

"The intervention allows for the articulation between the high and low slopes, configuring the municipal infrastructure in order to allow an effective connection to the Algarve's Multi-municipal Water Supply Systems", added the municipality.

This was the largest project, in terms of amount – it was just under 4 million, at 3.900.790 euros -, which it was possible to present, «under the terms of the notice for water supply, and the sanitation component did not was eligible».

«It is an investment that can be combined with the interventions carried out and allows the supply of water to Alta Mora, the western border of the municipality of Castro Marim, in other words, an adduction channel with about 54 kilometers of pipelines. This supply will be guaranteed by two works – central subsystem (1st phase) and central subsystem (2nd phase)», framed the municipality.

With the works that will be carried out, in addition to «the development and improvement of the living conditions of the resident population», Câmar de Castro Marim believes that it will also achieve «an undisputed enhancement of the interior of the municipality of Castro Marim, working as a factor attractiveness to new residents and as a lever for the local economy, particularly in the tourism sector'.
