The “Memorial ACTe” – Center for Expressions and Memory of Traffic and Slavery of Guadeloupe (France) is the new Council of Europe Museum 2017. Interestingly, a museum located not in Europe, but in the Caribbean, since Guadeloupe is a French overseas department located in that part of Central America.

O "MACTe" it was part of the list of three finalists for this award, which also included the “Musée des Confluences” in Lyon, also in France, and the Archaeological Museum in Heraklion, on the Greek island of Crete.

The distinction of Museum Council of Europe 2017 was awarded following the presentation by the president of the EMYA/EMF jury (European Museum Forum) and scientific director of the Portimão Museum, José Gameiro, to the members of the Committee on Culture, Science and Education of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), during the meeting held in Paris, in December.

The ECS/European Solidarity Center in Gdansk, Poland (2016), the MUCEM Marseille in France (2015), the Baksi Museum in Turkey (2014), the Liverpool Museum in the UK (2013), and the Museum de Portimão in Portugal (2010) were some of the most recent winners of this important European museological distinction.

After the 2017 Council of Europe Award, in May it will be time to award the European Museum of the Year Award (EMYA 2017), for which three Portuguese museums are nominated: o Money Museum, from Lisbon, the NewsMuseum, from Sintra, and the Museum of Leiria.

This year, between 3 and 6 May, the Croatian city of Zagreb will host the 40th edition of the award ceremony. European Museum of the Year Award, event that, in addition to numerous participants and experts, will bring together professionals from 46 nominated museums from 24 European countries.

The European Museum of the Year Award (EMYA) and the Council of Europe Museum Award were launched in 1977 by the European Museum Forum (EMF). Since then, under the auspices of the Council of Europe and in collaboration with other international organizations such as ICOM, NEMO and the Best in Heritageand, its aim is to recognize the excellence and public quality of European museums and encourage innovative practices for the benefit of society and its communities.
