The Algarve was distinguished as the Best European Destination for golfing in the annual awards given by the British magazine Today`s Golfer, considered the “Oscars” of this sport.

The Algarve Tourism Association (ATA) explains that «these awards result from the vote of the publication's readers who expressively elected the Algarve as a region of excellence for the practice of this modality, having achieved 48% of the votes compared to the others competing destinations'.

In addition to this award, won for the first time, the Algarve was also recognized for the fourth time with the award Best Value which distinguishes the region's quality/price ratio as one of the great attractive factors for golfers.

After the 2016th anniversary of the practice of golf in the region in 50, this double distinction represents, in the opinion of ATA, the agency responsible for promoting the destination in foreign markets, «an excellent indicator for the beginning of 2017 and the materialization of the success achieved through the effort and joint work developed by ATA and its associates around the continuous commitment to ensure the excellence that golfers expect from a destination like the Algarve».

In the words of Dora Coelho, Executive Director of ATA, «It is a great pride for the destination to be recognized internationally with these two awards, which result from the strong promotion strategy that we have been developing in partnership with the private sector of the tourism industry of golf'.

ATA recalls that golf «is an extremely important tourism product for the Algarve, as it significantly contributes as a strong and effective alternative in combating seasonality, currently assuming a key and growing weight in the global income of the Algarve. destination: in 2016, around 1,3 million rounds of golf were recorded, which corresponded to an increase of 10,5% compared to the previous year».

At the moment, there are about 40 golf courses, spread across the region with different characteristics. «The Algarve has a set of conditions that make it an excellent golf destination, with emphasis on the quality of its infrastructure and the good climate that allows this sport to be played throughout the year», concludes the ATA.
