The first session of the IV Jornadas de História do Baixo Guadiana will take place on 20 January, between 9:30 am and 16:30 pm, at the António Rosa Mendes Municipal Historical Archive, in Vila Real de Santo António.

The Conference opens at 10:00 am with the communication «The associative movement in the Algarve: sociability, culture and heritage in Baixo Guadiana», by Patrícia Palma.

The involvement of the Portuguese in the two nineteenth-century wars – the Peninsular War of 1808-1814 and the Civil War of 1828-1834 – irreversibly altered the nature of the relationship between individuals – citizen and “citizen”, then emerging concepts – with the sociopolitical world .

Meetings for the public discussion of ideas and news were generalized, circulating through newspapers, leaflets and loose sheets, and collective reading with an intervening sense began to organize the sociability of different social groups, as can be seen in the dynamics association formed in the Algarve during the XNUMXth century.

“We will dedicate this conference to the analysis of this social and solidary dynamism, highlighting specific cases of the Lower Guadiana, where it will be possible to understand how such private initiative institutions have actively and diversely contributed to the long process of cultural development in the region”, explains the author.

Can such organizations, spaces and practices integrate the concept of cultural heritage? How and with repercussions today?

This will be followed, at 11:00 am, by Luísa Martins, who will speak on «So that the people do not suffer from hunger: food management in the medieval Christian period», which aims to «demonstrate how medieval councils managed food production and how they fed populations, from the acts of the council of Loulé in the medieval Christian period».

«From the consecrated trilogy of bread, olive oil and wine to the sale of fish on the square's stalls, an image of the daily life of the Algarve population is presented».

The Conference ends, at 14 pm, with a visit to Cacela Velha, with the theme of the history of eating habits from the archaeological record, conducted by the archaeologist Catarina Oliveira.

Entries must be made via email [email protected] or telephone 281510260. Admission is free.

The remaining sessions of these Days, throughout 2017, are scheduled for March 17th and May 26th.
