The Aljezur Victim Support Office (GAVA), which will operate in municipal facilities, is inaugurated on Friday, January 20, at 16 pm.

The ceremony for this new infrastructure, which will provide technical, psychological and legal support to victims of domestic and gender violence, will be attended by Catarina Marcelino, Secretary of State for Citizenship and Equality.

This new space was «a long-time wish of the Municipality of Aljezur». This happens “not only because of the lack of a proximity response to the victims, but also because of the need to intervene in the context of training, awareness and deepening of knowledge with all government entities with competence in matters of social protection, education and security, involving also other local partners of a non-governmental nature, but that are also involved in the field on the ground», says the City Council of Aljezur.

Thus, the GAVA that already existed in the municipality of Odemira, is now also available in Aljezur. This office will have a technical team, to support victims of domestic and gender violence, with technical and administrative personnel necessary for its functioning, under the responsibility of TAIPA – Cooperative Organization for Integrated Development of Odemira.

The technical, psychological and advocacy support will, in turn, be “available at least once a week and also in emergency situations”, informs the municipality of Aljezurense.

This new office is part of “the strategy to combat domestic and gender violence, presenting itself as a territorialized response in the area of violence, in harmony with the V National Plan for the Prevention and Combat of Domestic and Gender Violence (2014- 2017)".

Therefore, within the scope of this, a protocol was signed between the Secretary of State for Citizenship and Equality and 16 other entities, including the municipalities of Aljezur and Odemira and TAIPA, for the implementation of a strategy to combat domestic and gender violence in the municipalities of Aljezur and Odemira.

This protocol also stipulates the carrying out of awareness campaigns for the community and schools and an inter-municipal plan for equality, which will involve the two councils.
